It was the day which I was waiting for a couple of years. The promotion announcement of the post from the superintendent of the police of Chennai. Vignesh was the contender of this promotion. Vignesh track was impeccable, and the department members almost had friendship with him. His commitment had proven time and again through cases that he
had solved successfully. This morning Vignesh looked normal when Watson
and I met him in the police station. He knew very well that there were other contenders with strong recommendation for this promotion and that they had very strong political support which is backing them. His value among those contenders was humongous. No one could even
dare to be considered for this promotion. Nevertheless, anything might happen, given the political scenario at that time. Vignesh never
care about the promotions that took place with these kinds of political pressures. His candidature was reasonably rigid for this post till December 2019. This year 2020 was
totally a game changer. The statistics has changed dramatically. Especially, the kidnapping case of a college student. The way Vignesh handled the case was astonishing. The kidnapped girl was bought by the police safely
to home headed by Vignesh. He became hero in media men. In March 29th, He arrested son of well-known
politician how as involved in this case of kidnapping. The evidence that Vignesh presented in the court was damning. The sentenced the culprit to a seven-year jail. This case reached the masses as no other did. Vignesh inspired the entire department and all
those aspirants who wished to join the police department. His credibility rose exponentially and he proliferate the database of his enemies at the same time. Today most leaders of police department believed that a decision would be made that contracted the push of big politicians of the state.
The information would be made public after three more days. It was 10:05am. Watson and I waited at the park Hotel near the police commissioner office where an internal meeting was held to make announcement of promotion.
It started at 9am, and we waited eagerly for it to end. Vignesh told that he would join us for lunch after the meeting.
“I am sure the decision will be made this time. It will a pity not promoting him.” said Watson
“My friend I hope your words come true. Why don’t you take an inspiration of that kidnap case for your novel?” I asked.
"Ah! Come on, boss. I am afraid you totally forgotten the genre of my novel. It is a love story, don’t you remember? Including kidnap scene in that story is like holding a shotgun while being in a family function” Watson said
while I observed him turning irritated. I smiled and said “I remember very well dude. But look there. Here he comes. The damning inspector Vignesh.
Vignesh smiled elegantly, wished us hello and took a seat near me.
How long have you guys been waiting here?” asked Vignesh.
“Hope it didn’t get too late”. He had manly voice that carried an underlying
dignity and portrayed a rugged character that any police officer would dream to possess. He was in his late thirties and was muscularly built
at around six feet in height. He wore black framed spectacles which resembled a typical scientist of the nineteenth century. His hair was little curly. He had a reputation among his fellow officers that he smokes only when he gets confused.
What was the outcome of the meeting? I asked Before Vignesh could reply, some other policeman rushed into the restaurant. All of us turned towards them. I saw Watson’s face turning red
at once as he sat in a perfect alert posture. The policeman gave a flower bouquet for Vignesh, shaking his hand and congratulating
him. Watson sat back at ease again as we comprehended the meeting’s outcome.
Watson and I joined the rest of the people and congratulated the newly promoted superintendent of police Chennai city.
“It’s great to see you here, MR. Boss, the ace detective. I know that you and inspector Vignesh are good friends” said inspector
Vinoth, the subordinate of the new SP.
“Of course, Mr.Vinoth. It is a day to congratulate you all instead. It is your day, because a justified decision has been made against all odds that the department was facing these days” I said.
There was no case that Vignesh
could not solve in his career. He had a proud track record if he did retrospection. Meanwhile, Inspector Vinoth got a call from headquarters and he left the restaurant to take it. As we were eating our tomato soup, Mr.Vinoth came back in a hurry.
“Hey people, we have got a call from headquarters. Vignesh is asked to be at office right now. I am sure he wants to take up a case on the day of his promotion” said Inspector Vinoth.
Vignesh got up from his chair and left the restaurant. He signaled us that he’d be back in a while. I asked Inspector Vinoth in a concerned voice” what is it about? Something confidential?”
My phone rang meanwhile. It showed an unknown number. I took the call while Mr. Vinoth waited to answer my question.
Hello. Am I speaking to detective Richard Boss?” asked a lady with very sweet voice that seemed considerably heavy.
“Yes. Boss speaking. May I know who this is?” I replied and moved away from the gathering since everyone was looking at me, expecting me to conclude the call soon.
“This is Nanditha Swamynathan. I am calling from the Swamynathan’s villa on M.G.R Road. Our manager was found dead this morning on the terrace. We informed the police, but we want
you to join them in the investigation” she said hurriedly.
“Yes sure, I know the place. I’ll be there soon” I said and hang up.
I joined the dining table again. Inspector Vinoth and Watson were having a chat. While other policeman went out of the restaurant by that time. I took my seat saw that the main door was opened; it was Mr.Vignesh, He looked in a hurry.
"Boss, I need to go now. The manager of Mr.Harsha Swamynathan was found death in their own house terrace this morning. Harsha Swamynathan is a wellknown real estate businessman. I’ll have to drive the proceedings there. You guys please continue and thanks for all your kindness for taking time out of me” said, Mr. Vignesh.
“Wait a minute. Is the place where you have to go, M.G.R Road?” I asked.
“Yes, The Swamynathan’s villa on M.G.R Road” said Mr.Vignesh.
“Then, Mr. Inspector it is the place where we have to go together. I got a call from Nandita Swamaynathan, a
family member of Swamynathan’s family. She wanted me to join the police in the investigation and she got the permission also” I said Mr. Vignesh shook hands with me with a smiling face.
“That’s good news. I am unaware of the permission but it’ll be nice if you are with me. Though, I am not sure whether this case needs a private detective. Anyway, let’s move” he said
But, why? “Why should someone appoint a private detective when no one is affected in their family, but the manager. It doesn’t sound weird but little unusual” said Vignesh.
