Part - 22 Flashes in Fog

Start from the beginning

However, he could not make out the flag on the ship, because the visibility of looking at a small ship some 15 kilometers away in pouring rain is next to zero.

Then, the destroyer started sending Morse code, via a flashing light,

It was almost as if it was awakened from the shell impacting the water,

Could the destroyer have failed to spot a battleship?

Especially when the battleship was close enough to see the destroyer....

It started flashing. The glow of the light contrasting the dim colors of gray fog and dark blue water.

DO.... NOT.... SHOOT.....

DESTROYER.... Z23.....

It flashed those two messages, the spotter right next to the captain translating as fast as he could,

Z23? Wasn't that one of the destroyers that was assigned to escort their task force when they were near Norway?

What would it be doing in the region between Iceland and Britain?

"Return their call, tell them that our radar and radio are damaged and we're low on fuel. Perhaps they may be able to provide help." Captain Lindemann said.

One of the sailors got onto one of the signal lamps,

Warship.... Bismarck....

Radar.... inoperable... Radio.... inoperable....

Low.... on... Fuel.....

The Bismarck flashed the message back through the fog.

"The crew are flashing messages back, I think that worked...." Daniel said.

"Do you know what they said?" Z23 said.

"I don't know.... Something about fuel, I think... they're going really fast." Daniel said, trying to use his limited knowledge of Morse code.

"Actually, the captain told me this ship is low on fuel, they got taken off of their original course!" Bismarck said

"That means that they're trying to ask Z23 about how they're gonna get more fuel!" Daniel said, beginning to smile as he tried to piece the puzzle together.

"Uh, so what do I say?" Z23 said.

Daniel immediately turned around to find the open map still on the table.

So, Hamburg is a few hundred miles away, that was probably the port they were going to, based on the pencil drawings on the map.

"What if you offered escort to port, I know a giant plane magnet would absolutely love that prospect." Daniel said.

Bismarck flashed a slightly worried expression, but there was seemingly nothing else to try.

"Uhmmm.... Here goes nothing......" Z23 said.

The destroyer was inactive for a short while, before flashing its signal lights again.
