The tale of Ymir is a myth that not many know about. At least inside of Paradis. The myth states that Ymir made a deal with the devil to receive her powers, that there are 9 titans, that no one can survive the curse and that Ymir is dead.

The tale of the first titan goes back 2000 years. It tells how a girl named Ymir Fritz made a deal with the devil of all earth. In return of her deal, she received an incredible power. The power of the titans.
The way of describing Ymir, and what she herself is seen as, is differently based on where you hear or read it from. Some calls her a god-given miracle, while others belive that Ymir became a devil herself after she received her powers.
It was said that the first titan, was referred to as the founding titan, and that she used her power to serve king Fritz to cultivate the land. And that Ymir used her powers to build bridges, amass wealth for the Eldians, and also vanquished the armies of Marley, Eldia's enemy under the Kings command.
To reward Ymir of her service, the king took her as his concubine and together, they had three children; Maria, Rose and Sina.
It was said that during this time, Ymir grew to genuinely love and care for King Fritz despite his behaviour and attitude towards her.

In an assassination attempt on the king 13 years later after Ymir acquired the power of the Titans, she died while thwarting the kings death.

The king then forced his daughters to eat their mothers corpse in an attempt to preserve the power of the titans she held. He commanded his daughters to continuously reproduce, to have their children eat their spines upon their deaths and perpetuate this ritual from child to child; all so that Ymir's blood would not die out and Eldia could rule forever with its Titans.

Ymirs children, Maria, Rose and Sina ended up inheriting the power of titans from their mother. They became: The molding titan, the principal titan and the monstrous titan. In the end, Ymirs titan split down into 9 titans with different abilities and beliefs.

The molding titan split into three others, the colossal titan, the armoured titan and the warhammer titan. They all share the ability to have full control over their body composition, can increase mass and harden at will.

The principal titan also split into three others after her spine was eaten by her three children. They became, The Female Titan, The Attack Titan and The Founding Titan. They are all driven by abstract principles such as freedom, adaptation and transformation.

Lastly, like her sisters, the last daughter of Ymir, The Monstrous Titan, also got eaten by her three children. Resulting in them becoming, The Jaw titan, The Cart Titan and The Beast Titan. They are all aberrant and deformed in appearance and drawing on hybridity and animal nature.
The story also names a curse. A curse that makes the inheritor of one of the 9 titans die after 13 years. The same length that Ymir lived after she acquired the titan power. It's impossible for any of the 9 titans to live past the 13 years...
