Is this what it feels like to be trapped in a coma? A dream? Or even a nightmare?
This place- it's too vivid, too real. Inhuman figures stalk the streets of this godforsaken city. Ripped posters of heroes hang limp on the walls, while illegal graffiti spills like a curse across derelict signs.
Shadows of shady figures huddle beneath crumbling buildings, their eyes glinting with something predatory. I catch my reflection in the cracked window of an abandoned store.
A scrawny child stares back at me- bright eyes full of confusion.
Chills ripple from my feet to the nape of my neck.
That's not me.
And this isn't where I'm from.
Who am I? Where am I? Why am I here? How did I come to be here?
A man, slumped against a stained wall, beckons me with a crooked smile, revealing a missing tooth among the yellowed remnants. My heart races as I realise he's not the only one watching, their eyes boring into me with a predatory gaze.
No. No, no, no-
What the hell is this?
The ground spins beneath me, and I run. I run until my filthy sneakers betray me, sending me sprawling to the ground. My knees scrape against the concrete, blood mingling with dirt.
Fuck.
I grip my hair, hunched over, gasping. What was I doing before I ended up here?
The adrenaline fades, leaving an ache in my body, my heart thundering in my ears. Bruises and grime tell the story of a life I can't remember.
I touch my neck, feeling the pulse of reality tugging me back. My other hand clenches the ground as if it might slip away.
I'm scared. But what do I have to lose? Nothing. I don't know who I am, and I don't have anyone to return to. No family, no home, no knowledge. I couldn't read the writing on the walls, and couldn't make out the symbols on the streets.
If only I could teach that fucker from earlier a lesson.
I bang my head against the ground in frustration, but when I look up, the same ripped posters and graffiti stare back.
I'm back in this city, and my knees are fine, my hands clean.
The man is there again, his toothless grin beckoning me.
And I listened.
Walking towards him with a glass shard behind my back.
I swallow dryly.
I don't know who I am or how I got here, but one thing is clear: I'll do whatever it takes to survive.
