It took ages for you to get ready. You put on your satin black dress and let your long hair flow down from its curlers. Every year for Christmas the country club hosts huge ballroom events where the richest in OBX attends.

You hated it.

You found it classist and a lame excuse for the rich to socialize and get richer.

You usually spent your Christmas' with your best friends JJ, Pope, John B and Kie. But this year your parents convinced you to come.

“You didn’t tell me he’d be here! ” you whisper yelled as you stepped into the fully loaded hall in the Country Club, letting go of your brother’s arm as you tried to avoid the glances of the man standing by the bar.

“I knew you wouldn’t come if I did,” your brother explained, chuckling as you hit his arm. “Look, he’s my best friend, and not to mention basically the richest kid in OBX. It would be weird for him not to be here,” he paused, placing a glass of champagne which he grabbed from a passing server in your hands.

“For my sake and mom's, please try and put aside whatever is going on between you two and just have fun,” he bargained.

“Fine,” you smiled, taking a rather large sip of the wine before offering him a little smile. “I do owe you from last time I guess ,” you informed him, and he smiled as well before he left you to your own devices. You decided to wander away from the room filled with guests, waltzing onto the secluded balcony, already knowing he saw you,

already knowing he would follow.

“Are you hiding from me, love, ” his smooth voice echoed as you heard his steps come to a halt behind you, the little smirk in his voice already quite prominent.

“I’m not doing a very good job at it,” you breathed, taking a quick sip from your drink to work up the nerve to see him, and talk to him for that matter.

It had been months since the last time you spoke, even more since you saw him. The both of you were desperately trying not to act on feelings.

You were both very much aware of the fact that a few months ago you two were standing on the pier he asked you to spend the night with him, acting as if the unspoken boundaries sat by your brother were nonexistent, though the night of carefree adventure only made things more difficult, having led to late-night phone calls and secret rendezvous, coming to a sudden halt when you realized what happened.

Realized that innocent crushes and harmless flirtation had melted into something else, something permanent and real- something you weren’t allowed to feel as an obligation to being with the pogues and him being a kook.

“You look beautiful ,” he noted with a careful smile, settling himself at your side, eyes avoiding yours as much as yours were avoiding his,l. “Did you wear it just for me?” his smile turning cocky, attention divided between his memory of your night and how good you look now.

“I didn’t know you were coming.”

“But you hoped I'd imagine?” he pressed and his internal battle was defeated quite quickly when he turned to you, eyes instantly falling on the side of your face, raking over your body in a way he’d be in far too much trouble for doing.

“I did,” you admitted.
"I haven't been able to stop thinking about you. And my friends... They hate you. And I hate myself for feeling this way about you," you admitted.

“Do you know how much I miss you?” he explained , and you nodded, stepping even closer to rest your forehead against his.

“I still do miss you Y/n, I miss you like it was the very first night and if I could take us back in time, I’d never have allowed myself to let pride get in the way.” You smiled when a strong hand found itself sliding around your waist, your eyes meeting his desperate ones even though you tried your hardest to look away.

"I think it's time to tell people. We can't keep living this way and hiding how we feel. I love you Rafe," you said.

“Good,” he smirked, hand shifting to press your body against his. “Because I love you too and I don’t want to spend another second missing you.”
