0 - Goodbye

My feet run on the soft ground under the rain that still falls relentlessly. I am soaking wet and feel heavy. Fatigue challenges my weakened physique and I can hardly take another step. The only thing that still keeps me going is the hand that holds mine, without letting go. The body is full of wounds from the thorns and branches protruding from the ground throughout the forest.

Our breaths become heavy and labored in the rain, but that warm hand continues to hold me as if it is protecting the most important thing in her life. A few tears slide down my cheeks without me realizing it, as if I feel a bad omen drawing closer every second.

The sound of footsteps and the cries of the angels of death continue to chase us. Although the strong body holding my hand has a worried expression I've never seen him before, the second he turns toward me, his gaze is devilish is as sharp as the blade that stabbed him.

I don't think fate will give us any more time to be together....

The end of the dense forest is a cliff, a deep overhang at the bottom of which is a river whose current becomes dangerous during the rainy season. It is the end of our hope to continue, but I try to imprint in my memory the person in front of me, though now my eyes are too blurred to see clearly.

The person I have never seen cry is now doing so and pulling me into a tight embrace. In our last moment, when everything must end, I don't feel as sad as he does. I can die with him, the little boy I loved with all my heart for so many years.

"Din..." My trembling hands encircle his face, "It's all right, Din. I've never regretted falling in love with you, living with you. It's not your fault."

He squeezes me tighter and speaks in a broken voice. "I'm sorry, P'Ken--I want to be with you for a long time more. I want to be happy with you." The sobs are loud in the rain as if it were our last goodbye.

"I will love you forever. Whether in this life or the next, we will meet again. I will look for you until I find you again."

"I love you, Phi..."

The lords of death chased us until they caught up with us. As if time had stood still, the group of rugged men led by a local influential man, pointed their guns at us with the murderous gaze of those who intend to kill those who have no escape in front of them.

"Even if I have to die, I have no intention of being your slave! One day you will have to answer for what you have done towards other people and nature!" Din's gaze does not waver fearfully before these people. He remains faithful in protecting the forest he has always loved.

"Then die, Tharani!"

Fire from the barrel of the gun explodes for an instant as lightning crashes in front of us. The noise is so deafening that it stuns me. Din stands between me and the gun and immediately blood-red drops splash onto my face. My beloved's body staggers back and we both fall off the cliff into the river below....

Images in my head exlode from the impact due to the height. I don't feel the slightest pain, only memories of the past streaming past me in bulk.

It is said that when our life comes to an end, we think back to the beginning....

The beginning when I met and loved a boy named Din Tharani.

To be continued...
