The girl from California,
She once meant a lot to me.
She lived south within a desert,
She was as happy as could be.

I learnt she didn't have much money,
And struggled to pay the bills.
And would walk to school each day,
Over the dry and dusty hills.

She was eighteen with a mind so mature,
Studying to be an EMT.
She cared about everyone before herself
And I know she really loved me.

Homeschooled until her father left,
That's when everything went bad.
Her mother was sick and couldn't support them,
They really relied on her dad.

So the girl from California,
Worked two jobs after class.
And with a tough upper lip she plodded through,
Waiting for each day to pass.

Sometimes weeks would go by,
And she wasn't once online.
She would always come back though,
She could never afford the electricity on time.

What an amazing writer she was,
And a beautiful artist too.
Many times I would wake up to her creations,
And see all the stuff she would do.

The poems she would write me,
The things that went through her mind.
All her family seemed to love me already,
They all seemed so very kind.

She always wanted to go into the city,
But she couldn't afford the train.
And she ever longed to meet me,
But she couldn't afford the plane.

To the girl from California,
I owe you an explanation.
It's not that I didn't care for you,
Or that you didn't fill me with elation.

You were like no one I'd ever met,
So different from the rest.
And that's why you didn't deserve me,
You deserved the very best.

I know I left so sudden,
Without saying goodbye.
One second I was there and then I wasn't,
Without explaining why.

I deleted your number,
Then an email came through my phone.
"Please, don't leave me now,
I can't bare to be alone."

I'm sorry I couldn't respond,
I feel bad every single day.
I just knew a life without me,
Would mean your life would be okay.

You deserve so much better then me,
And I promise that is true.
So, The girl from California,
I'll never forget about you.
