Escaping My Shadow

The darkness cackles,
Whispers in my ear,
Creeps closer like shadow,

Both love and fear,
Blood burns and boils,
Vision blurs,

They’ll never know,
How much it hurts,

How it commands me,
Breath imprisoned in my lungs
Choking me with half-dulled pain,
Saying it’ll stop if I obey.

It’s not mine to keep,
Or to give.
But it’s my life.

And I choose to live,
Break free from my cage.
Indent a single tear.

A hole on the previous page.

I look back without regret or fear.

I willfully close the door.

On what I’m not anymore.
I can finally see.

I am free.
