"It's just me, Mask." I said.
He pulled off his mask halfway, "Hi."
"What's that mask you just put away?"
"..."
"What is it?"
"It's called the Fierce Deity Mask. It's...The most painful mask I own."
"Why's it the most painful one you have?"
"It doubles my body size and strengthens my muscles, so when I take it off, I feel myself shrink along with my muscles. It feels like they're slowly being torn out, taken by pulling strings. I wouldn't suggest you try it. It also gave me these." Mask pointed to the scars under his eyes.
"All that in that little mask?"
"I'm surprised I haven't destroyed the thing yet...I feel some kind of comfort from it, though, like the spirit inside's my friend."
"Did I hear my name?" Spirit asked, poking his head into the doorway, "Sorry to interrupt."
"Yeah. I said your name by accident-" Mask began, before Spirit noticed the mask in his hands.
"Is that the real Fierce Deity Mask?! I've only read about it!" Spirit came over to see.
"It- ...Yeah. It is. Don't put it on, it might kill you. You're a lot smaller than me."
"It can kill you?"
"Let me show you...let me show you what it's capable of." Mask sounded regretful as he spoke the words.
"No! Are you gonna be okay?!"
"I'll be fine, it'll just...sting...a little bit. Like- ... Like a shot." Mask picked the mask back up, "Just don't look at me until I tell you to. I don't want to be the one responsible for temporary insomnia."
"You mean nightmares?"
"...Same thing. Look away for a moment." Mask jumped before he put the mask on, "Oh! And cover your ears. Make sure you can't hear anything."
"O...Kay? You're really starting to scare me, Mask."
Spirit turned away and covered his ears.
I didn't do anything but watch.
Mask hesitated to set it on his face, but when he did, screams and cries filled my room entirely as Mask curled up into a ball to try and escape the pain he currently felt.
"Mask!" I yelled, setting my hand on Mask's twitching, shivering back.
A minute or so later, he turned into what didn't even resemble himself anymore.
A tall man—At least seven feet—with white hair and eyes, and markings such as the scars Mask had. Two red ones below each of his eyes, and a blue one coming from his hairline to the end of his forehead.
He also wore a very light grey-green tunic with a metal front piece.
"Mask...?" I asked.
"It's still me..." He panted, using the voice of a middle aged man.
Mask walked over to Spirit and tapped his shoulder.
"Yeah?" Spirit turned around, uncovering his ears, then jumped to me at the sight of Mask's form.
I scratched his back to try and comfort him.
"It's still Mask, Spirit. Don't worry, I watched it happen. It's still him. Just pretend it's a costume." I told him.
"C-Costume?" Spirit looked back at Mask and held up his hand by his chest and made a small wave.
Mask sat down on the floor and did the
same—Holding his hand next to his chest a giving a nice, friendly wave.
