As the first century of the Targaryen dynasty came to a close, the health of the Old King,
Jaehaerys was failing. In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength with ten adult dragons under its yoke. No power in the world could stand against it.

King Jaehaerys reigned over nearly 60 years of peace and prosperity but tragedy had claimed
All of his sons, leaving his succession in doubt. So, in the year 101 the Old King called a Great Council to choose an heir. Over a thousand lords made the journey to Harrenhal. Fourteen succession claims were heard. But only three were truly considered.

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the King's eldest descendant and daughter of the King's second eldest son, Aemon Targaryen, and his wife Jocelyn Baratheon. The second claim came from the King's eldest male descendant, Prince Viserys Targaryen, who was the eldest son of King Jaehaerys's third son, Baelon, and his sister-wife Alyssa.

The third claim came from Princess Valyria Targaryen, only daughter of King Jaehaerys's eldest son and heir, Prince Daeron, and his late wife Elara Stark. It was the death of Prince Daeron, who had been beloved by all of Westeros just like his mother and father, that led the King to calling the Great Council since he suddenly found himself without any sons to inherit.

This since both Prince Daeron's younger brothers had died years earlier; Prince Aemon had passed nine years earlier and Prince Baelon died a few moons before his brother.

The only child Prince Daeron left behind was his daughter, Valyria, named after the land that the Targaryens once called home, and when her grandfather called his Great Council she was a child of five namedays and even though she was beloved like her father, Princess Valyria had two great disadvantages in the eyes of the realm; not only was she a woman but she was also still a child.

At the Great Council it was declared by all lords paramount and lord vassals of the Seven Kingdoms that Prince Viserys Targaryen would be made Prince of Dragonstone. Both Princess Rhaenys and Princess Valyria had been overlooked in favour of a male heir for a woman could not inherit the Iron Throne.

Jaehaerys called the Great Council to prevent a war being fought over his succession. For he knew the cold truth. The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself.

Prince Daeron had truly been his father's favourite child and Princess Valyria was without a doubt the King's favourite grandchild. King Jaehaerys had been reduced to a shell of the man he had once been when he lost his most beloved and dearest wife, Queen Alysanne. During his last years his strength and wits began to fail him and he was confined to his bed and during that time the only thing that could bring him any happiness was the company of Princess Valyria whom he nicknamed the Realm's Jewel.
