Duets ~ Hevans (Glee) Part 1

Start from the beginning

"Aren't duets supposed to be like between a girl and a guy?" Sam questioned.

"Well, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor would protest." Kurt noticed the lost look on Sam's face. "Make 'Em Laugh?"

"Sorry."

"Singing in the Rain?"

Sam shook his head, still not getting the reference.

"1952? Nothin'. Okay, maybe you are straight."

"What?"

Kurt brushed it off, "Nothing. Listen, rent it. And then look up the menu for Breadstix online, and call me because we are going to win this." Kurt left Sam in the middle of the hallway and passed Finn, who seemed confused and concerned about what he may have overheard.

In the time leading up to the competition, Finn tried to convince Kurt and Sam (during separate times) that doing a duet together wouldn't be a good idea.

Finn was reminded of the crush his soon-to-be stepbrother had on him the year before, prior to them possibly becoming brothers. He didn't want a repeat of that with Sam.

As for the new boy, Finn warned him that he may get bullied for singing a duet with the only openly gay kid. Although, Sam had plans to honor his commitment to Kurt and sing with him.

The day after Kurt had a conversation with his dad about the duet, the boy found Sam in the showers and called off their partnership.

He walked into the almost vacant room and cleared his throat to get Sam's attention. "Don't worry. I'm not gonna go all Shawshank on you."

Not making eye contact, Sam replied, "This is kinda weird. Guys usually don't talk to each other in here."

"Well, this can't wait," Kurt contested. "I'm setting you free. You can do your duet with someone else in glee - someone that the world deems more appropriate."

Sam looks at Kurt. "Did I do something to offend you?"

"No," Kurt said quickly. "No...it's not you, it's me. You've been honorable actually. And I wish you the best. But I realize that I need to sing with someone that matches my passion and talent level."

"Who's that?" Sam asked with a small smile, seeming genuinely interested.

Kurt dodged the question, "You know they make special shampoo for color-treated hair."

Kurt already started to walk out when Sam responded, "I don't dye my hair."

"Ah-huh," Kurt still refused to believe the blond.

Kurt volunteered to perform the day after his conversation with Sam. He announced that he would do a duet with himself, while Santana made a comment about it being "vocal masturbation or something."

He sang Le Jazz Hot from Victor/Victoria, a film about embracing both the male and female sides. Everyone clapped and cheered for his amazing performance once he finished.

Sam couldn't help but watch with admiration. This boy, who seemingly faced hardships for simply being who he was almost daily, was still and always will be unapologetically himself no matter what got thrown his way. Not to mention, he was incredibly talented. Despite Sam feeling like he barely knew Kurt, he had a lot of respect for him.

Later in the day, Sam caught up with Kurt in the hallway and let him know that he had done an amazing job with his performance.

Not expecting the compliment, Kurt's face flushed, but he did his best to hide it and act nonchalant. "Thanks. I'm sure your duet will be good, too. But mine will still have been better," Kurt added with his usual confidence, causing Sam to chuckle.
