Luz took in the scent of the rainy ocean. She felt something strange in her heart that night, with everyone asleep, it felt surreal. The crew had decided to stop at a small rocky island that night, to form plans on how to cross all the way home in such stormy weather. Most, including her, had suggested to stay here and wait for the storm to clear. It would be safer than to try to cross with lightning in the sky and rain pattering their sails. But everyone still had time to decide, because this storm seemed to never end. Luz grabbed onto the edges of the ship, carefully inspecting the island below. It was small, for sure, it had just enough space for a couple trees, but the rest consisted of essentially just large rocks. She took in the scenery, the way the moonlight seemed to make them glow and shine, with the pitter-patter of rain slapping against them, as if trying to stomp out the shine. And then she noticed something on the other side of the beaches.

A vibrant pink glow, and what appeared to be a woman. About her age, Luz guessed, with Lavender hair and pale skin. She was collecting shells along the beach, smiling. Her legs seemed non-existent, covered by a conveniently-placed rock. Luz frowned, until she heard it. Soft humming, unlike anything she had ever heard before. The humming turned to singing slowly, a light, beautiful song. The pink light seemed to glow brighter and Luz finally recognized the details. A siren, just like the stories she'd heard from the crew. Stories about beautiful women who sung love songs to lure away sailors. But despite those stories, Luz couldn't help but walk off the ship. She didn't hesitate, it didn't matter if she was dealing with life or death. She heard the girls singing and the softness of her voice and was enchanted. Besides, who cared if this purple-haired beauty was a killer or not? Something about the way she majestically twirled her hair with her fingers looked so graceful to Luz and who was here to tell her no? Luz finally reached the rock that covered her legs, and noticed the lack of them. Instead was a white, scaled tail with lavender fins that coiled up in the sand. Luz flinched when she noticed the mermaid stopped singing, and heard a soft gasp. The siren has totally, 100%, undoubtedly, spotted her and she could feel her eyes watching her through the rock.
And then she heard it chuckle. A soft, genuine giggle that made her knees weak. She peered around the rock and took in the sight.

The prettiest girl she had ever seen, with pale skin and shiny golden-yellow eyes. Her hair lay around her neck, with dark brown streaks around her finned, pointed ears. She had two tiny scratches on her cheek and shell-shaped earrings. She wore a necklace that was lined with smaller shells and a gateway moon charm in the center, that lay just above her chest, which was delicately wrapped in some kind of black bandage. She seemed so content laying there on the beach, and Luz felt her face get hot.

"Come on, strange girl." Said the siren, flicking her tail playfully . "I don't bite." She closed her eyes and looked down, placing her collection of assorted seashells and trash.
Luz heard something in the back of her mind yell, No!! Run, run now, while you still have a chance!!, yet she felt her body slowly approach the beach, and thus the mermaid. The mermaid seemed content with this and went back to sorting her trash. Luz poked at a plastic water bottle, and the mermaid hissed a little. Luz looked up at her and noticed the mermaid flinching. "What is it?" Luz asked, picking up the water bottle and studying it, searching for some kind of specialty.

"I have uhm.. A friend. He likes stuff like this, stuff you humans seem to um.. throw on our beaches. Hes a bit young to go to the surface on his own so.. I do it." She relaxed her shoulders and sighed. "He considers them treasures, isn't that funny?" She smiled up at Luz, and Luz couldn't help but smile back.

Luz looked back at the items and paused for a moment, before looking up again and saying, a little more confidently, "Whats your name?". The mermaid crossed her arms for a moment, and then looked back at Luz with a bored expression.

"Amity." She said at last. "My name is Amity. Thats kinda it. I was hoping you'd like, confess your name first. You humans are always so curious about things you really don't need to care about." Amity shrugged and started drawing stars in the sand.
"But I wanna get to know you!" Luz blurted. "You seem.. really pretty." She looked away and felt her face get hot again. The mermaid giggled again, this time more like Luz was joking, until she realized Luz wasn't laughing and snapped her mouth shut, her face turning pink.

"I.. see." Amity muttered. The two avoided eye contact for a second, and then Amity put her hand on Luz' cheek and whispered, "I have a feeling. Deep deep down, that you're part of my destiny." With that, Amity scooped up her treasure and headed back toward the water.

"Wait!" Luz hurried to stop her, grabbing her hand. "My name.. Is Luz..." She paused, biting the inside of her mouth. "Please, when can I see you again?" She asked desperately, rubbing her thumb along her soft hand.

Amity blushed deep red before finally gasping out, "Waning Crecent Moons, I head out to the beaches of your homeland at night.". She looked up to meet Luz' eyes and nodded. "I have my ways of getting there, its secret to only my kind though." She teased, nodding her head to herself.  "I'll be looking for you, too, so don't ever miss it, alright?" She reached up from the water and gave Luz a slight peck on the cheek, and splashed back into the moonlit waters.
