He started life among those blessed few,

Was born to high Irish nobility,

Under two great saints, much knowledge he drew,

To be by himself, in humility:

And angels steered him to a tomb now bare

For seven years he lived as a hermit,

Ate nettles and herbs, spent his time in prayer,

Many came to join him, he did permit:

The company of beasts rather than man,

Since he preferred to be with God's great gifts,

To do His work through nature was his plan,

The curse of epilepsy he did lift:

And from his tale of calm contemplation,

In solitude I have mediation.
