Black American Music (Or Here Be The People's Protest)

Tempting trilling trumpet milking these notes,

Captivated crowd craning to catch a glimpse

Of Our Otherworldly Lady that sings so fair.

Melt my mind and whip me up a good time;

After all, angels stay workin' God's Miracles and

Powerfully pleasing the people with their song.

What sultry and seditious magic is in song?

These looping and evocative words which denote

A happiness despite all else, a low-down dirty and

Husky claim to Virtue's Fruits. Let them glimpse

The heels of our hands, our sweat, our dress, our step in time

To this music birthed in a Land--Our Home--unfair.

Press past pain and into the meat. Eat the fair

And all anguished ugly. We have heard God, His Song

Majestic, mighty, magnificent. We have been patient with time,

Our One Opponent, but never complacent. These notes

Crash crazed, calling down Heaven--glimpses,

Tentative but teetering there, of a Promised Land. And

What will you say when our gospels clamor and

Bring down the walls of your house? What's fair

Has been denied again and again. You glimpse

A twisted world in liberation's wake but that song

Is a lie. Why must you twist our words and denote

The shadow of erroneous work where it doesn't exist? Time

Has made us weary. And we have heard all in due time,

But to sit and wait is to die. To wallow in sorrow and

Not dry our faces is to have the Devil ride us. Notes

Of freedom must be sustained and what is unfair

Must be struck down like the Serpent. Carry our song

In the hollow of your throat and let the world glimpse

That we have never humored appeasement. Glimpse

The interior of our lives, the generational weight of time

That has riddled our cultural tree. A song

Shorn from our bodies in a Land Foreign and

Acidic to our very existence. What is unfair

Will not prosper in the hands of the people. Denote

Now what is lost. Glimpse what is to Come and

Understand that the tide of time will turn and what is fair

And just will be enshrined in song and aged notes.
