"As another battle tactic, the Thetean Navy would have homing pigeons onboard, as a way to get a message to other ships, should they sink. The way they did this was interesting, when they were expecting a battle, the ships would swap pigeons around, so the escorts would have pigeons to eachother and the main fleet, and the flagship had pigeons to the rest of the fleet. This also helped with reconnaissance reports, when telegrams were too risky. In the event that a message had to get back to the Thetean mainland, ships could be set up so that a single pigeon could travel all the way there in just under 10 days. An advantage of using homing pigeons instead of telegrams or mail planes, was that telegrams could be intercepted by enemy submarines, and planes could be shot down. Given the petite size of a pigeon, it is very hard to shoot it down with 5 inch guns, 40mm cannons, or 25mm AA, as well as the fact that their size makes it hard to lock on with radar"
