"I didn't think I'd enjoy this 'date' thing, you know?"

"What changed?"

"..."

You peeked at him and noticed a slight yellow hue dusting the center of his face. He made sure to examine the setting sun with more intensity than the star itself. You stayed quiet too, considering another 'opportunity'.

"Can I kiss you?"

"What!?" He leaned away in surprise as he shouted a mix between a scandalized gasp and a flustered, light-headed squeak.

"It's okay if you don't want to, don't worry. I just figured you'd want to learn some more about human affection before our date ends."

Zim's eyes furrowed a bit in his wide-eyed gawking. You were starting to feel uneasy and focused instead on your knees.

"...Show me."

Your head snapped back in his direction. You hadn't realized your nervousness, you're usually so aware of it.

"Are you sure...?"

He leaned in as if to confirm it. You weren't entirely sure what you were doing honestly but did the same. You placed your hand gently on the side of his face and directed it to your own. Your lips closed with his and you moved against his a couple of times before slowly parting. His face was now so flustered it might as well have never been green.

At first, his eyes weren't fully opened and he didn't budge from the original spot. You could feel some pressure on your finger as he leaned into your touch ever so softly. Your shoulder sagged and your lips stretched to form a smile at the sight. Zim let out barely audible chirps and his antennae would probably seem stuck to the back of his head if they weren't forced in place by his wig. When he did move, he heavily sighed and beamed. It wouldn't be far-fetched to guess that this was more relaxed he's ever been.

Then suddenly his contacts snapped open and wary, he regained his posture, his hands were kept as far away from yours as possible and he made sure to stay far from your reach. You too winced in response, imagining you'd put your hand on a hot stove. You almost had to hold back from saying 'ouch'. Zim seemed alert but unbalanced, for a moment you thought he might fall off the building.

He stood sharply and stepped away from both you and the edge. He seemed to hesitate, his finger raised in the air ready to emphasize his point.

"I- uh- Ehm- I... I... I um- eh-" He struggled to speak, stuttering more than even you could.

"Ahem! Eh- I...enjoyed... this...date..." He added long pauses between each word as if he hoped you'd forget the previous ones once he'd finished.

That sentence was not at all what you expected from him.

"I... Never mind, I've said enough! It's none of your filthy business!"

That was more like it.

"I will now be returning to my base." He assumed a more militaristic pose. "I expect you to do the same after 'Skool' tomorrow."

"I...- Okay. I'll see you then."

"Yes. You will."

"Do you want me to walk you home?"

"No! I'm perfectly capable of doing that myself!"

"Alright. Be safe." You smiled politely at him.

He nodded and turned on his heels towards the staircase, marching as he climbed down. You stared at the stairs for a while before turning back to your beautiful sunset. You figured you'd stay a little longer, it'd be awkward to leave immediately after him. Besides, you could stay your entire life looking at a sunset like this without getting tired.

As your mind was flooded with thoughts of the small alien you kissed, the sun soon became the least visible star in the sky ahead of you. Millions of sparkling white dots freckled the sky and they replaced the clouds for the night. The teal-colored sky progressively darkened until it became more likened to navy. The wind blew over your hair, and in the depths of the night, the once refreshing breeze became chilling and soon cold.

You stood from your seat at the apartment's edge and retreated to your little room. You changed into a sweater and some shorts and washed off your eyeliner. You plopped down on your bed by the window. Safe and warm under your blankets as your mind continued its endless rambles, leaving you restless yet satisfied as infinitely as your internal monologues.

Who would've guessed?
