a/n: i dont actually know what happens at one of these events?? i just remember dally being a jockey in the books so.
TW/ guns

dallas winston lied, stole, and cheated. he didn't abide by the law because why would he? there was only two things in his life he did genuinely, ride horses and love the people he cared about. and today he merged those things together. it wasn't a shock that dallas winston was a jockey, in fact most people knew dally could pull in a lot of money from it. he wouldn't say it but he didn't do it for the money. when he was on a horse no one cared that he was dallas winston delinquent of tulsa. he was just another guy on a horse. except for now for the first time he wasn't gonna be just a guy on a horse to someone because he brought with him harley valentine who hadn't cared about a race in her life but her eyes never left dally.

when they arrived they were met by buck and a couple of other guys. harley smiled politely still grabbing onto dally's hand. the guys behind buck suddenly went wide eyed and started laughing. "no way i thought y'all were kiddin'. your dally's girl aren't ya." said a tall skinny guy in a hat.

"yeah i guess that would be me? but my name is harley."

dally laughed but was pulled away by buck to do something harley didn't understand but assumed had to do with the race.

"i've never seen dal bring a girl to a race before." the same guy from before said.

"i've never seen him take anyone to a race now that i think of it." another one added. harley couldn't help but turn a bit pink. she didn't realize she was the only one he took here.

she went to respond when approaching people caught their attentions. another jockey walked in, at first glance if you didn't know any better he looked like dally, same build, same hair, same height. however they all knew it wasn't dally. the lookalike had a friend chasing him down. "hey theres some guy looking for you," the friend said causing the jockey to spin around "he seemed real mad i'd be careful."

they walked too far out of reach for the eavesdropping to continue so they all turned back around to face harley. "i'm ricky." the talkative one said putting out his hand that harley shook.

"are you a jockey too?" harley asked causing a laugh from both boys.

"no i clean the stables." he said containing his laughter.

"oh." harley said suddenly laughing too because of her stupid questions.

___

dallas winston had another talent besides being a jockey. everyone always wanted to know how he got away with everything he did, how he wasn't dead yet. the truth was, he wasn't sure. he did learn a few things growing up on the rough side of new york however. he learned to have a good intuition. it saved him many times from cops, and stopped him before breaking into cars with owners nearby. today however, he couldn't help but feel a pit in his stomach. the same one he typically felt when he knew something bad was about to happen. he expected it of course. why would anything good happen to a crook like dallas winston. he still decided that no matter what happened, he had to see it out with harley, together.

dally returned and grabbed harleys hand pulling her to a set of bleachers where she would watch the race. front row. "are you nervous?" harley asked turning to look at him as they sat in the bleachers for a bit before dally had to go again.

"nah, i don't get nervous." dally said with a smirk.

"i guess i shouldn't wish you good luck then, you clearly don't need it." she laughed leaning her head on his shoulder.

"hell yeah i got this," he paused "as long as your rooting for me." he said turning to harley pressing a kiss to her lips.

"always." she smiled when they broke apart. dally pressed another quick kiss to her lips before leaving to get ready to start the race. she noticed him turn back a few times like he was almost scared to leave her. ricky, and the other guy she learned was named stuart joined harley in the bleachers and they watched all the racers line up with their horses. dally smiled at harley before facing his attention to the tracks. then the gunshot was fired and they took off.

"he's pretty good!" harley said cheerfully watching dally pass other horses, he wasn't in first yet but harley was still amazed.

"hell yeah, winstons a natural!" ricky said cheering him on.

_____

dally didn't use to think during races. he didn't need to, just focus on the track, focus on your speed, your personal life doesn't matter here. the mindlessness was always his trick to success. thats why he never invited anyone here, it was his escape from real life, but he broke that rule for harley. and he had no regrets when he looked in the stands. her hair was blowing as she jumped up and down cheering, the biggest smile was plastered on her face, and she was looking directly at him. and in that moment dallas winston realized that feeling he couldn't put his finger on. it was love. he was in love with harley valentine. he let a smile cross his face at the realization.

then he heard the gunshot.
