-Chapter 1-
'The Beginning'

*The beginning of a New Year in Yen*

When I first met you, it was the start of a new year. The sun shone brightly, welcoming the new year. I, as the discipline of a fine doctor, had to trek into the misty mountains to pick up herbs for a sickly patient that people had long given up hopes on. I hoovered up my straw basket and slung it over my shoulder. Today was going to be a long day. As I made my way through the packed area of people selling fireworks and spring festival couplets, a familiar voice yelled out to me.

"Y/N!"

When I whirled around, I spotted a small, fragile little girl attempting to keep up with me.

"Why did you follow me, Yue Chang?" I sighed as I touched her hair, causing the elegant ponytail she had tied to fall apart. "You were meant to stay and assist Master," I said.

Yue Chang slapped my hand away with a slap. We just stood there for a second, waiting for her to collect her breath. She pouted and twisted her head sideways. "I-It's like I wanted to run all the way here," she says. Master has issued a warning to me."

"What exactly is it?"

"......"

"......"

I smirked. "Yue Chang is never directly to the point." I pondered. "Well, if there's nothing else, I guess I'll simply start moving." I sarcastically groaned, turning my head, ready to go hike for the mountains again.

"W-Wait!" Yue Chang exclaimed.

Oh?" As I turned around, I wondered aloud. As I peered into Yue Chang's marble-like eyes, my brow arched. "Then you'd better tell me right away, because I've still got medical herbs to harvest."

Terra misses the aroma of early spring and the warmth of the sun, which beams and flows past us. The bell tolls, announcing the return of the warmth and joy that the citizens had sorely missed.

"D-DON'T D-DON'T D-DON'T D-DON'T D- Yue Chang's anticipated "sudden" wail. Tears starts to pour from those dark walnut eyes onto her youthful, delicate cheeks.

"W-Wait! "What's the matter?!" I knelt down immediately, my gaze meeting hers. "I-I was just joking around, you know."

Yue Chang sniffled and rubbed her eyes red as she brushed away the tears that were streaming down her face. "That's not it." I overheard the kids next door talking about a terrifying monster that lives in the mountains. Isn't that the infamous horrible Nian? I-I just don't want to see you die..."
Between us, there was an oppressive silence until I burst out laughing. "Don't worry, Yue Chang, I'll be alright." Why don't you just return to master and......"

Yue Chang huffed and puffed. "I'm notifying Master that you were reading Yaoi instead of transcribing all basic criteria of bodies three times as a punishment."

"......"

This brat.

"And when you were meant to go pick up the morning newspaper, you were flirting with the aunties who were washing their garments by the river."

".........."

"........."

This cunning fox, who taught this weak and vulnerable kid how to huff and puff and blackmail. I shrugged and stood up, brushing any dirt from my trousers with my rough palm. I was being forced to deploy my trump card by this youngster.

As I got ready to play my trump card, the wind howled and roared.

"What are you doing?"   Yue Chang took a step back, her voice stuttering.

"Oh, you silly brat, you'll see," I cackled.

I dashed into the crowd as the bell rang out for the final time.
