And on the streets of memory,
you'll pretend you don't know me.
You'll forget the taste of my name,
and the tingle of my scent.

Perhaps, only for a moment,
but you'll pretend I was never there.

I'll search familiar faces among those
who roam without the weight of knowledge;
the strangers.
Because each known face lurking in the crowd
is merely a stranger to me now.

But it takes more than one to play,
I'll pretend too, today.
I'll forget the nicknames you gave,
and the feel of your voice.
Mayhap, like a story without an end,
I'll scoff and play pretend.

And I'll think of you as the unbeknownst,
when she walks with you,
I'll profess I don't know you two.
I'll dissimulate the memories that pop,
even after all this time.

I'll neglect you,
and perhaps then you'd remember;
to gain her, you lost someone too.

And perhaps then you'd remember;
just like chess,
it takes two to play pretend.
