Chapter 22: Bump in the Road

Start from the beginning

Then he drew out a gun.

Dirella gasped, this wasn't part of the plan. Sylvia froze, wanting to run to Dirella's aid but knew sudden movements would only spook the King.

"Like it? I'm planning on adding it to my army's arsenal," the King smirked then, proud to finally have the upper hand.

"Be reasonable here Maximus..." Dirella said, raising her hands in the air slowly. Sylvia then noticed a familiar twinkle on Dirella's wrist, something she had only come in possession of quite recently. Did she know how to use it though?

"You're the one being unreasonable Dirella! I have a war on my hands and you talk of another on the way?" The King hissed.

"We can help with your war," Aliyah piped up, causing the King to drag his attention from Dirella to Aliyah. The King grinned.

"You're lying," he said, his free hand fiddling with a small pendant around his neck. Sylvia eyed the pendant warily, sensing some form of magic ebbing from it.

"Speak your truth," the King then demanded of Aliyah. The gem stone shone brightly, and Sylvia sensed the magic expand and grow, directed over towards Aliyah. Aliyah then froze, eyes going glassy as if under a spell.

"We plan to go south towards T'Challa and meet with my father where we will recruit the elves. But I don't have faith he will join knowing how he feels about other outsiders plus my failure to capture the hunters," Aliyah prattled on, a deadpan expression on their face.

"Enough!" Dirella yelled out. The King dropped the spell, unhanding his pendant. Aliyah blinked a few times, and looked mildly confused about the whole situation but said nothing more.

Dirella then stepped forward towards the loaded gun. Sylvia saw the gem on her wrist glow, and knew what was about the happen.

"This new war, it isn't just about you and it isn't just about us," Dirella said, and with a wave of her hand the room was gone. Replaced instead by a war torn battlefield. Sylvia looked down and saw dozens of bodies littering the ground as loud clashes and bangs erupted in the distance.

But as Sylvia looked down, she realised with a start that they weren't all the same race. She saw humans mixing with elves and goblins. Even a werewolf or two thrown in the mix.

"This new enemy has no prejudice, and will kill us all," Dirella continued. Through the smoggy haze, Sylvia began to see the outline of a figure. The figure was massive, two stories tall and sent shivers up her spine. The figure, behind the smog, rose their hands in the air and chanted something Sylvia couldn't quite understand.

Then the dead bodies began to stir.

Slowly, with creaking and cracking of bones, the dead rose. They scrambled off of the ground, a new found purpose on their mind. They then began to drag their feet, slowly walking to a destination unknown. Dirella then dropped the illusion.

The King was gobsmacked, his face pale and clammy. Sylvia couldn't blame him, she felt a bit light headed from the experience. It had felt more real than her experience with the so called time demon, as if that event had actually happened exactly as Dirella depicted it.

Dirella herself had a solemn expression on her face, reliving a clearly painful past experience.

"We haven't much time," she said softly. The King ripped his eyes away from the floor to glare at Dirella, gun now by his side.

"You get that Absalom to join, and I'll join," he said abruptly. Dirella blinked, before glaring back at him.

"Maximus you don't-" however she was cut off by a loud crash. The group froze, unsure of what to do next.

Then another crash. Followed by loud screams from the party outside.
