Teardrops and Butterflies

(Sequel to The girl in the attic)

Chapter 3

Preston’s POV

We made our way into the restaurant and I gave our names to the man behind the front counter. He checked for our reservation and then asked one of the waiters to show us to our table. My parents were already seated but got up as soon as they saw us approaching.

“Relax, they’re going to love you,” I whispered into Katie’s ear just before we reached them. She smiled up at me and then turned her attention to my parents. They looked the same as always except for the fact that they were both a little more tan.

“Hi Mom, Hi Dad,” I said as we came to a stop in front of them. My mom greeted us with a huge smile and then threw her arms around me.

“I’ve missed you!” she squealed, sounding like an excited cheerleader.

“I can tell,” I replied jokingly as I hugged her back. When she finally let go of me, my dad shook my hand and then they both looked at Katie.

“I’m so happy to finally meet you,” my mom said holding her arms out to Katie. I watched carefully, readying myself to step in if necessary.

“Me too,” Katie replied as she stepped forward and gave my mom a quick hug. My mom looked ecstatic while Katie looked uncomfortable. My dad nodded his head at Katie in greeting and then we all sat down around the table.

The waiter was still there so we gave him our drink orders and then started making small talk. It was a bit awkward at first but it didn’t take long before everybody relaxed and by the time our dinner arrived I was actually having fun. Katie was chatting with my parents like she had known them forever and they seemed to really like her. I knew that they would but I couldn’t help but worry a bit until I saw it with my own two eyes.

They know about Katie’s cancer but I haven’t really told them much about her past. It is a very sensitive subject and it wasn’t my story to tell. I did however warn them not to ask too many questions and for once it seemed like they were listening to me.

They told us about their travelling and the places they had visited. It sounded like they were really enjoying themselves and I couldn’t help but feel happy for them. At first when they told me that they were going to travel the world and send me off to live with my aunt and uncle I was really mad but then I met Katie and everything changed.

It was getting late and since my mom and dad were still tired from their flight we decided to call it a night. We said our goodbye’s in the parking lot and then headed our separate ways. They were visiting for a whole week so we decided together that they would use Saturday to rest and then come and visit us at our apartment on Sunday. Katie offered to cook but my mom insisted on helping, claiming that she wanted to spend the whole day with us and didn’t want us weighing on her and my dad.

I had fun and it was good to see my parents again but by the time we got into the car I was happy that the night was over. I wanted to take Katie home and hold her in my arms where she belonged.

“Did you have fun?” I asked as I started my car and pulled out of the parking lot.

“Yeah I did, you’re parents are really nice,” she answered, smiling at me.

“I didn’t always think so but I guess they are,” I replied jokingly, making her laugh.

The drive home was quick and soon we were back in our apartment.

“I’m going to change quickly, these shoes are killing me,” Katie said as she headed to our room. I followed her with my eyes until I couldn’t see her anymore and then quickly switched the kettle on. It was cold so I figured I’d make us some hot chocolate. It didn’t take long before Katie returned.

My breath caught in my chest and I’m sure my eyes must have bulged out when I saw her. She was wearing a pair of very small pajama shorts and a tank top that showed off her perfectly flat stomach. She giggled at my reaction as she held her hand out to me.

“You should put something on, you’ll freeze walking around like that,” I said as I stepped forward and took her hand. Now don’t get me wrong, she looked amazing. I just didn’t want her to catch a cold or something.

“I was hoping that you’ll keep me warm,” she said trying to be seductive.

“Oh I’ll do a lot more than keep you warm, I’ll have you burning up in a few minutes,” I replied teasingly. She blushed at my words and I smiled at how beautiful she is.
