Silent whispers made their way to my ears as I attached myself to a door that led inside the Alpha's office. Several men had walked in an hour ago and yet I couldn't determine what they were talking about. Their voices were barely above a whisper and even with my ears perked, I didn't hear anything. There were a few growls, spilling straight from the Alpha.

I arched my back straight and paced around the corridor with my hands over my hips. Brian had gone into the meeting earlier and I was only waiting for him to come out so I could sincerely apologize from poisoning him. Perhaps, the Alpha could then be a little more lenient on me.

Banishment was cruel.

It was better to run away at the end of the day than becoming a lone rogue with no one to reach out to.

I didn't want to be either of it.

I let out a heavy sigh and sluggishly walked away from the door. The meeting wasn't coming to an end anytime soon and standing for hours outside was making my feet sore. Instead of spending any more time, I strolled straight into the Alpha's room that was the closest one and to my surprise, it was wide open, it's walls inviting me in.

I took a sniff of the air, finding no one's scent except his. It had been days, days since we did anything and yet somehow, no one had made his bed yet. It wasn't common. The Alpha always had women around. The large appetite for sex was in their blood but it seemed like he had lost it.

My fingers traced across the lining of the bed as I went in deeper to his room. A tickle rose in my core, forcing a heavy exhale out of me before I turned to the drawers by his bed. My first instinct was sneaking, as always. As much as I pried away from it, I couldn't. My hands were aching to find something.

I stooped low on my knees and drew one of the drawers open to find nothing. My curiosity furthered, I grabbed onto the next drawer and opened it up. I had done it a few times already and every time, there was nothing inside the Alpha's room.

But this time there was something.

Frames.

Countless frames were buried inside the drawer, some broken and some intact. I shuffled through them and pulled one out. It was an image of the Alpha with another woman. My eyes shut tight as I forced myself to remember the face—the face of his dead mate.

The woman occasionally came around the house a few years back. They mated, people cheered, celebrations followed, and then the woman's death transpired. The next thing we all knew that the woman died and a quiet funeral took place.

It was a blur to me. I couldn't remember much as I was occupied with my studies and work then. But, I remembered two funerals taking place, almost in the same year. One of them being the Alpha's mate and the other one being his father—Alpha Clayton Hughes.

The reasons for their deaths were never made public. In fact, no one knew except for the Alpha to how they both died. There were rumors that he had killed them both and one of the rumors turned into facts when the Alpha claimed to kill his mate.

The consequences of being mated to him.

I sighed in sorrow and kept the picture inside before pulling out another one. They were mostly images of the Alpha with his mate. Some of them were taken inside the house itself and the garden outside.

The longer I looked at the pictures, I realized something disturbing.

The woman—his mate—she wasn't marked.

A thud crept into my ears and my heart jumped before I raised my chin towards the direction of the voice. It came straight from the Alpha's office. Standing back up on my feet, I closed all the drawers and sped to the door. Pausing, I took a peek outside first and only found Brian walking through the hallways alone. There was no one else with him.
