Steve's POV

I sighed before walking into Dustin's house. Because the kids had curfews last night, we couldn't celebrate New Year's Eve so they decided to have a New Year's Day party.

"You made it."

I looked over and smiled when I saw Y/N walking into the front room. She joined our group after she moved into the area during the summer after senior year. She didn't have any friends and Nancy instantly took her under her wing.

The longer we started to hang out, the closer Y/N and I got. At first, I wasn't so sure about befriending her. I wasn't sure if it would bug Nancy.

After a while, Nancy noticed me being hesitant around Y/N and confronted me. She told me that how I was acting made Y/N worried that she wasn't welcome. Nancy asked why I was acting weird around Y/N and I confessed to her that I was worried it would cross a line.

She told me to get over it and be nice. After that, I started hanging out with Y/N more. Y/N and I soon became incredibly close.

"You sound relieved," I chuckled.

"Well, there's a group of 6 teenagers and a too-perfectly in-love couple that makes both of us cringe," Y/N listed off. "So, yeah, I'm happy that you're here."

I laughed as she grabbed my hand and pulled me to the backyard. For the next little while, we sat out back and talked. When it started to get cold, we decided to go inside. We sat around and talked. Suddenly, Nancy turned the conversation to the most cliché topic.

"So," she chuckled, "what are your New Year resolutions?"

"Are you serious?" Mike laughed.

"Come on," she defended her earlier question. "It's January 1st. People always talk about what they want to do the coming year."

"How about a year without any supernatural or foreign crazy group coming after us?" Mike laughed.

"I'll take that," Lucas jumped in.

"No more people going missing," Will added.

"Come on, guys," Nancy sighed.

"An A in Algebra would be great," Max sighed.

"Getting through the year would be great," Lucas chuckled.

"I hope I catch up this year," Eleven sighed.

"I can help you," Y/N said gently. "Whenever you need help with homework, call me."

"Thanks," Eleven smiled. My stomach did a flip as Y/N jumped to help like she always does.

"What about you, Steve?" Dustin asked. When I glanced over at him, we had a teasing smile on his face.

"I guess," I hesitated, "leave my glorious job of scooping ice cream."

"Any idea what you want to do?" Y/N asked.

"I don't know," I sighed. "Haven't really figured it out yet."

"You will," she smiled reassuringly. "You'll figure it out."

I looked away before our little staring contest could get awkward.

"Are you sure there isn't a different resolution you'd like to make?" Dustin teased.

"I don't know what you mean," I said, clearing my throat.

"What does he mean?" Johnathan laughed.

"Nothing," I said through my teeth.

"Dustin, what are you talking about?" Nancy chuckled.
