When the first bell chimed, Erwin turned to the clock in surprise. Both hands rested on twelve. Midnight. Levi did not move. Awkwardly, Erwin ran his hand through his wet hair. He opened his mouth several times until he finally found the right words. He knew Levi only too well by now. He didn't like being the centre of attention. He didn't like being asked about his birthday. It was an inconvenience to him. Not important. "You take the day to rest today."

Levi wrinkled his eyebrows slightly.

"That's an order," Erwin punctuated his words.

"Tch," was all he got in reply.

"We made it through another year. Survived another year," Erwin muttered to himself as he stared out the window into the night again.

"But for what?" mused Levi. "We continue to be in utter darkness." Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Erwin.

Even if he would one day be called the most heartless commander in the history books - Erwin was doing a good job. There was no question about that. But would they ever escape this nightmare? Would they ever be able to leave the walls without being armed? Would they ever be able to live without the protection of the walls? And how long would they last? Levi hated this carousel of thoughts - as much as he hated people being late.

"Tch."

The commander turned his head to Levi and could guess his thoughts. But before he could say anything, the latter beat him to it.

"Not exactly on time, your friend." His eyes stayed as disinterested as usual. But Erwin knew better. Levi was boiling inside. This afternoon Levi had still been training with his team. And suddenly he had to drop everything and accompany Erwin at a gallop through the rainy weather. The destination of the unexpected ride had surprised Levi. They were with the recruits. What could there be of such importance at this training place? And why had they had to hurry if they had to wait now?

They had been waiting for this Peter for over half an hour. The small room was simply furnished. Apart from the wall clock, the walls were bare. A desk. Two chairs in front of it. But Levi had preferred to stand, leaning against the wall. How important could Peter be? He had never heard of him.

There was no storage cupboard, no shelf, no chest of drawers in this room. No piece of furniture in which confidential documents could have been kept. The candles on the desk flickered. As Erwin was about to hide his chin under his wet woollen coat, the door suddenly flew open.

"Erwin!" the man who entered greeted the waiting man delightedly. Levi raised his eyebrows briefly. Peter had a certain resemblance to Erwin. Related?

"I apologise for my lateness. It..." Peter exchanged a quick glance back and forth between Erwin and Levi. Erwin gave him a quick shake of his head to indicate that Levi was not yet in the picture. "We... got a bit stopped," Peter said, moving to stand behind his desk.

"Stopped?" pondered Levi. "By titans?"

However, the slamming of the door against the wall brought him back to reality. While Peter and Erwin eyed the small person who had burst into the room in surprise, Levi continued to stare at the floor, which was covered in a myriad of dark shoe prints - and wondering if he should explain proper cleaning to the soldiers here on his day off?

"Peter!" a girl's voice thundered out. "Are you kidding me?"

"A family reunion and a relationship drama. Why was I here again," Levi thought. He placed his foot leaning against the wall on the floor. He wanted to leave the room. He had no business here. Would they have tea here? Black tea?
