On Hatred

Everyone casts the first stone
Without knowledge that the second one
Is a finger pointing
Right back at them.
Then the third stone casts itself and brings
The fourth one, an inevitability like November, and the fifth one
Is always the absolute worst of them.
The sixth stone is passed to the

Children, like Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery",
And the children's children get the
Seventh stone and cast that one, too.
The eighth stone is passed to friends
And even strangers, until the
Ninth one comes and all considerations
Of feelings and weak skin are cast aside in the
Castings of more stones.
This tenth one hits the wrong person.

Every person is the wrong person
To hit with those
Damn stones.
Let's put them back in the Earth,
And there's a log in your eye
That you've gotta pull out
Before you are too blind.
