Prologue

"What's that?"

Napatigil ako sa panonood ng Doc McStuffin nang marinig ang malakas na pagsara ng main door sa baba. It was 12 PM at night and it was unusual for it to happen. Because when my parents came home late, they didn't do that thing, instead they closed the door slowly.

Kahit nagtataka ako, nanood na lang ulit ako at hindi inisip 'yon baka 'yong pintuan ang may deperensiya kaya gano'n ang pagkakasara ng parents ko. Kumakalawang na rin daw kasi 'yon at sa susunod pa papalitan. But in the middle of watching, I was shocked when something broke downstairs again.

"Zyaire!" My mom exclaimed from the kitchen, which is the reason why I stood up in shock.

Napalabas tuloy ako sa kwarto ko at bumaba sa may hagdanan namin kahit medyo nanginginig ang mga paa ko. There were a lot of thoughts running through my head, but when I suddenly remembered that it was already my birthday that day, I calmed and felt excited while smiling.

Alam ko susupresahin nila ako ngayon, lalo na't lagpas na 12 PM at birthday ko na!

"They were busy, yet they still did a surprise for me. Huh." I whispered to myself, smiling.

Hindi ko tuloy maiwasang mapailing at mapangiti nang malapad dahil nag-abala na naman sila. I even laughed when I thought that maybe my mom was just scaring me. 'Yong tipong sisigaw siya ng malakas na parang may nangyaring masama sa kanya para lang maagaw ang atensiyon ko, but she will just surprise me. Best actress yan e!

When I got to the kitchen, my smile faded as my thoughts were totally ruined. Hindi ako makagalaw at makasalita sa gulat. I don't even know how to react when I saw the back of a shirtless man pointing his gun at my mom.

My mom cried even more when she saw me and tried to shoo me away with her teary eyes, not making any sound because the man might see me. Kitang-kita ko kung paano kinasa ng lalaki ang baril na hawak niya kaya hindi ko tuloy napigilang mataranta.

"M-Ma..." I trembled when I called her as my tears start streaming down my cheeks.

"A-Anak, umalis ka!" Malakas na sigaw niya at humagulgol ng malakas, nagmamakawa sa akin na umalis pero hindi ko 'yon nagawa nang tignan ako ng lalaki na may masakarang itim sa mga mata.

He smirked. "Oh, is this your son, Laura?" Lalapitan niya sana ako kaso hinawakan siya ni mama sa kamay para pigilan. I was standing there, freezing and couldn't do anything but just cry.

"N-No, please... 'W-Wag mong d-damayin ang a-anak ko dito..." Pagmamakawa ni mama at tuluyan nang lumuhod sa harap niya. I saw the man how he reload his gun again, which is why I started to panicked. "A-Ako na l-lang, Ni—"

"Okay, as per what you wish, Laura."

A loud gunshot went off as my mother sprawled on the floor with a lot of blood. I cried more as I kneeled on the floor. The last thing I knew, the man looked at me and grinned, until he left us there while carrying the gun that ended the life of my mother.
