Chapter 17 - Riotous Body

Start from the beginning

His mom lifted her head to stare at the doctor, tears falling down her face. "Please, Dr. Kim. Please."

"Naomi, look!" Dr. Kim pointed to the stitches she had made on Ethan's thigh.

Cody moved closer to see.

Though Ethan's leg was not moving, his thigh was jerking. As if someone was holding two ends, pushing and pulling, pushing and pulling. The threads holding his wound together stretched and then tore through the skin, leaving an uglier jagged edge bleeding into the sheets.

His mom started sobbing. His mom, who had cleaned his nastiest scrapes and kissed it better, was weeping. Damien's mom went over to calm her down.

From the hospital to this room, they had spent hours taking care of Ethan. Cody could not believe that his brother was not going to wake up.

Dr. Kim looked around the room, mumbling to herself.

Ethan's bedsheet was soaked with sweat and blood. Used towels and cotton piled up at the foot of the bed, where the doctor had dropped them. A tray on the bedside cabinet contained all the surgical tools she had been able to grab when they had to leave the hospital.

It was not like one of the fancy wards, but this bedroom had become Dr. Kim's emergency room. Cody's mom started whimpering again.

"Naomi!" Dr. Kim snapped, making them all jump.

"Listen, we are not giving up. His anesthesia is wearing off, and his body isn't holding the sutures. I can't keep sewing. We need to try something different, ok?"

At his mother's sniffling nod, she continued in a softer voice. "Ethan is no longer bleeding out, but he has lost a lot of blood, and we are running out of infusions. I need you to ask Roman to go get more from the hospital. They have Ethan's records; they would know what type I need. Also, tell him to get blood clotting spray... you know what? Just ask him to go to the hospital and bring my phone up here. I'll call ahead myself."

Cody's mom nodded frantically and whisked off to do her bidding.

Mrs. Bane came back to the bed to replace the compress on Ethan's head. Then, Cody heard Zyga's truck leaving, and his mother returned with a cell phone.

Dr. Kim took off the stained glove from her right hand and called the hospital. She rattled off a list of items to be given to Zyga and hung up.

"Thanks, Naomi. While we wait for him, can you clean the towels here? We'll need them again. And get as many bandages as you can." Once again, his mom sped off to obey the doctor.

Dr. Kim changed the IV bag and looked at the new gash on Ethan's thigh.

Cody watched her work, wiping his nose on his collar. She inspected the wreck of the previous stitches she had made along his arms. Then, looked over the ones on his legs. As she came up, she pressed on Ethan's rib, which had broken during the fight with Ben Ryden.

Ethan moaned but did not wake. Dr. Kim moved upwards to check his pulse and eyes. Ethan was shaking, but he was no longer thrashing like before. Despite that, Dr. Kim did not remove the restraints they had made from bed linens to hold him down.

She stepped back after her examination. Mrs. Bane dabbed at the sweat from his neck and torso with a damp towel.

When Old Zyga returned, Dr. Kim selected a bottle and a can. She poured some of the clear liquid from the can onto cotton and rubbed it over Ethan's arm. Then she took the can and sprayed a foamy white liquid over one of the wounds, studying it closely.

"The blood-clotting spray will hold," she announced. Then she went to work closing the worst tears on Ethan's body.

She cleansed, sprayed, applied a dressing to each wound, and then bandaged the entire limb to hold them in place.

By the time she was done, no skin on his arms or legs was exposed.

Together, the three women lifted Ethan up, changed the bedsheets, and replaced the restraints. Dr. Kim hooked Ethan up to the blood bag and hung it on a nail next to the IV, along with three other bags containing clear fluids.

"Once the antibiotics and antipyretics are done, I'll switch him over to the IV. After that, we can only wait to see what happens. I'll give him some morphine to help with the pain." said Dr. Kim, filling up a syringe. She injected the contents into one of the tubes connected to Ethan's arm.

Soon, Ethan's breathing evened out, the grimace on his face smoothened, and his body relaxed.

Dr. Kim sank into the corner, looking worn out.

Cody's mom, now calm, went over to relieve Mrs. Bane on the watch duty.

"Come, Dr. Kim." Mrs. Bane motioned. "Let's get you something to eat and a clean shirt."
