(day 1)

"it's clearly blue and black."

"come on, it's white and gold!"

"caleb, i'm lame, not blind. it's blue and black!"

"reine, shut up. hey," i called out at the passing nurse, making her stop walking and turn her head.

"what color is this dress?" i asked, showing the nurse my phone.

"blue and black," the nurse spoke.

"ha!" reine danced -awkwardly, i may add, in front of me. her walking sticks clicking against the white tiles of westbrooke children's hospital.

i just stared intently at my phone as the nurse briskly walked away. "i just can't see it," sighing, i lifted my head back up as i placed my phone back deep in my pocket. "what are you doing?"

"i won," reine declared. "and this is my victory dance." she continued wobbling in front of me.

"more like a victory limp."

"hey!" reine shrieked as she went for my head. i dodged just in time and flew out of the sofa and ran down the hall. "no fair!"

i looked back at reine, slowly hobbling towards me as i continued to speed through the empty hospital corridor.

it was 2 pm and most of the people in this hellhole were either asleep, tending to the patients, or too busy dying. hey, don't blame me for being a cynical mess. living in a hospital does that to you.

that being the reason why whenever i get the chance to have fun, i take it. chemotherapy is not a guarantee that i would be cured. it's more of a treatment that basically prolongs my life. i would've been dead by now if i wasn't in chemo.

"catch me if you ca- ugh!" i fell on the floor on my bum as i bumped into something sturdy.

"watch it kid," the guy grumbled, exhaling smoke out of his mouth. "little children shouldn't be running 'round here."

i looked up at him, inhaling a good amount of the pungent smoke. i coughed a bit as i focused on him. he was looking down at me with brown eyes and a hard expression.

i grimaced as i realized i was on the cold hospital flooring.

"i'm not a kid, i'm seventeen. and fyi, you were the one standing in my way," i countered as i stood up. "i'm caleb, by the way." i stretched out my hand in a handshake.

i am cynical, not rude. my mother always told me that no matter what life gives me, i shouldn't reflect it to other people, especially people i don't even know. what i understood was, 'don't piss on anyone else's day just because someone took a shit on your cereal'.

my mother never liked cussing.

"didn't ask," he took another drag, pointedly ignoring my outstretched hand. "just get out of my way, caleb." the guy spat my name out like a curse as he walked pass me towards the east wing of the hospital.

"see you around, didn't-ask!" i shouted after him as the guy passed reine who was shambling over me.

reine looked at me curiously, "who was he?"

the guy shot me a withering glare as i answered reine, "i don't know but he was a jerk."

"right."

"he was interesting, though." i claimed, looking at the guy's retreating figure.

a few seconds were all it took for me to take a good look at him.

as i was on the floor a few seconds ago, looking up at him, i saw behind the smoke and his glowering expression, he was actually really attractive.

god damn it, he wasn't just attractive; he was hot.

oh no, i sound like such a diva.

"pssh," reine snorted. "interesting, sure."
