'Cause from up here, the sky is my thoughts, and we're all so small.
Jake's eyes drifted down the the ocean, where the rippling surface of the water distorted the reflection of the pyrotechnics still exploding overhead. The pier was at least a good thirty feet above the waterline, and just looking down made Jake's stomach turn.
He could almost see Yeonhee's face beneath the crashing waves, pale, empty and cold. If he had arrived at the pier even a few minutes later than he did, that might have been the sight he would have been greeted with. A shudder rattled his spine as he tried to wipe the disturbing image from his mind.
Jake buried his face in Yeonhee's shoulder again. The girl raised her eyebrows, feeling the warm tears soaking her sleeve.
"Jaeyunie~~," she murmured in a singsong tone, "what's wrong?" Yeonhee softly patted her friend's fluffy brown hair.
My heart and the Earth share the same rule: It starts with love and it ends with you,
"Yeon-ie, were you going to jump?"
Yeonhee started at the blunt question. "What?"
Wiping his eyes, Jake sat up and looked directly at her. "Were you?"
The girl scratched her nose quietly, not answering for a few moments. Eventually, she nodded. "Yeah. I was. Or I was thinking about it, at least."
Jake wrapped his arms around the girl and held her close. "I love you, Yeon-ie. Don't go away. Not if you can help it, okay? Don't try to do something stupid or else you'll hurt people," he wept into her hair.
Yeonhee hugged him back, feeling like crying herself. "I won't do it again, I'm sorry Jakey. I'm really sorry."
"You're okay, Yeon-ie, okay? You're okay. I got you. If you ever feel bad, remember that I love you. I love you, okay? Please–"
Yeonhee cut off Jake by cradling his chin in both her hands and looking him straight in the eye. "I'm sorry, Jakey, I'm not leaving you. I promise. I love you too."
