Xx Chapter Two xX-  All Eyes On Me

"I'll see you tomorrow night Donna. Thanks for lying to Macie for me, you know she's alway on my back."

"Yeah, I know. She needs a man, she be lacking in that department." She snickered.

I giggled, trying to hide my laughter. "Yeah, everybody says that. I should go. Leila's sleeping and Lexy is about to fall asleep. She cannot go to sleep without sleeping on top of me." I shook my head.

"Yeah, you gotta go. I can give you a ride."

"No! No, it's okay, we'll walk."

"Why you always doing that Kharter, I ain't gonna judge you or nothing.  We all livin' in the projects. Trying to make a better life."

"I know. But, I just be embarrassed. I have my babies living in some shit hole apartment. I hate this shit."

"It's cool, you know if I didn't have Hakeem, you could've come and stayed with me. But you know how he gets."

"You need to leave his wack ass. That's what you need to do." I rolled my eyes.

"Whateva. Whateva. You just saying that cause you ain't got a man. He pays my bills and pays for my hair and nails. I ain't got shit else to worry about."

"I don't want a man. Men ain't shit."

"When they not slinging dick. How much times I gotta tell you can't be forgetting that part." She said shoving my shoulder.

"Whatever Donna."

"I'm taking you, put your girls, in the car that Hakeem paying for." She flicked out her tongue at me and I rolled my eyes again, before I gathered our things, marching myself around to open the door.

When Donna dropped me off, I had to walk up this long stairwell, before I could reach to our door. There were a bunch of drugdealers, sitting down in the hall ways, and crack addicts strung out on the stairs. It made me sick to my stomach sometimes thinking that this was actually what I had to deal with.

"Please—Please gimme some money. Two dollas, five dollas anything." Is all this one guy who was always in this apartment's staircase would say. His name was Luther and he was old, so old and he was hooked on crack. Sometimes he would tell me he wanted something to eat, and I would bring food home from the diner for him.

But other times I tried my best not to feed his addiction. Sometimes I would hardly have enough money to buy shoes for Leila, or Lexington, but I would still give him pocket change, thining maybe he'll use the money when he's hungry.  Just Maybe.

Truth is the reasons I was working at that diner was because one, I needed the money to take care of Leila and Lexy and sometimes, I would take extra food that was left over, in order to be able to feed them.

All my money was going into keeping a roof over our heads and the medical books I was buying to study for school, I just couldn't take a chance of being on the street. Not again. I was planning on signing up for course upstate, but I didn't have enough money right now.

I may not be able to give them, cable, or expensive clothes, I just want to be able to make sure they're okay. It hurts. It hurts so bad, that I'm only twenty and I have to look after two four year olds, I don't remember asking for. But I'm glad they're here, because I wouldn't be the same without them.

After I put Lexy and Leila to sleep, I pulled my hair out of the knot it was in and sat down at the table, reading and reading before I fell asleep.

It was the next morning already and I had to catch the bus to take Leila and Lexy to their preschool and work to work. I was already late, and I knew my boss wouldn't be lenient, she like Macie were primetime, state of the line bitches.
