In the Order of the Phoenix, Petunia tells that dementors are by Azkaban. She also says she knew that because she heard Lily and "that terrible boy" talk about it.
You thought she meant James or something, but in the last book, Snapes memories there is one where he tells Lily about dementors, because of she asked it.
So the boy that Petunia meant was Severus
After finishing the last book, you can realize JKR described at that time a little part from Severus' and Lily's friendship
