Chapter Two

After a few days of recovery, Sani, the Zaltana clan's shaman returned to Tiani and Hinto's house, to help investigate just what went on. After listening to Tiani tell how she was doing her mental training, heard a strange voice, and then saw fire and flames, the Shaman became quite worried. Mental attacks are not a common special ability, so, after hearing about the details, he decided to leave, and do some research on the matter. At the very least, he needed to find a good defense, to help prevent something like this from happening again.

Perhaps one of the most troubling aspects was that it had to be someone from within the clan. As they knew who she was, and what her fears were, it had to be someone whom they have met, or to whom Tiani had come in contact with. So, naturally, they had to watch all of the eligible males that were entering into the challenge very carefully.

After what Tiani assumed was about half the day talking about these events, she decided she'd had enough. After all, she didn't have time to worry about the attack, because school was starting in four days and her best friend Genesee would be at her house to pick her up any minute! 'Must go shopping,' she thought, as she raced up to her room to get ready.

As Tiani was putting on her dark blue hoody over her black turtle neck, she heard a gentle knock on her bedroom door. "Come in," she muttered, almost half-muffled as the neck of the shirt pulled over her face.

"Tiani, aren't you ready yet?" The voice was a bit impatient, but she recognized it anywhere. 'Finally,' she thought, as she slipped on some necklaces, 'about time she arrived.' She went over to the door, poked her head out and teased, "Just give me a minute, Genesee and don't get your panties in a bunch!"

Genesee had light-brown wavy hair and bright sky-blue eyes with long silky eyelashes. She was not as tan as Tiani and she only stood at about four-feet and ten-inches tall, but being older, she had all the curves in all the right places. In all, she looked like a lightly tanned porcelain doll; though, thought Tiani, the attitude didn't quite match that of a doll. Today she was wearing a truffle color velour pullover top, a pair of blue cloud hipster boot-cut jeans that she bought at Victoria's Secret and a pair of black slouchy mid-heel boots.

Playing with the trinkets on her bracelet, Genesee began tapping her foot on the floor rather impatiently. "We need to get going Tiani or all the great clothes are going to gone!" Giving her friend another irritated look, she continued quite bitterly, "not that you care, wearing all that leisure junk you love so much!" She sneered as she looked at Tiani's outfit, and then gave a great sigh, "Will I ever get you into some sort of fashion?" The sheer thought of that made Tiani laugh so hard she almost fell off her vanity stool.

"Genesee, I just need to finish pulling my hair into a braid and we can leave, I promise." At this, she was an expert. She quickly grabbed a few strands of her hair, and began braiding them faster than Genesee had ever seen. "Not that you really care you are just going there to check out the boys, huh!" Laughing she stood up and gave her friend a hearty grin.

As the girls were heading toward the front door, Hinto kissed Tiani and told her to be careful. Genesee, not aware of what had happened a few days ago, scoffed a bit, but Tiani didn't really care. Promising her dad that she would be careful, and not take any unnecessary risks, the girls left the house with smiles and waves, and then quickly made their way down the path to Genesee's car.
