(I am currently writing an action/paranormal type book based around this)
We all have 27 souls but one main soul, its what keeps us going and living. Without it we would all just be empty vessels. Now, about the other 26, you see when something drastic happens in someone's life, it causes that particular soul to come out(how we show emotions) but when we get TO overwhelmed all of our souls come out at once and cannot get back in (Ex. A coma.) If they eventually find their way back in then sometimes they could lose their sense of belonging and emotion, causing hallucinations and other effects. We know this as schizophrenia.
