NINE

chapter nine
i can't sleep
real life!

Salem was laid staring at the ceiling trying to drift off to sleep. her eyes kept fluttering closed only to open again. she let out a quiet sigh, running a hand through her hair in annoyance. the only light coming from the hall.

"Tommy." she whispered, receiving a hum, "i can't sleep." she confessed.

"me either." he huffed, sitting up. "do you wanna just sit and talk?"

with a small smile, Salem nodded, patting the bed for him to sit by her. Tommy chuckled and stood up, shuffling over to lay beside Salem on the single bed. he swore he forgot how to breath due to the close proximity.

"why do you and your dad keep arguing a lot lately?" Tommy asked, curiously, rolling over to face the girl.

Salem shrugged. "he wants me to do well. i don't do well. he wants a daughter who doesn't shout and get angry easily. i can't change who i am."

"atleast you're trying. he's got to understand that." Tommy frowned.

"he does..." Salem mumbled, "it's just hard. it's always been me and him. but it's like since he's started going on dates and stuff it's been causing arguements."

"maybe it's because you don't want him to meet someone and you'll be pushed out. maybe youre scared of having another dad and that things will be different. so maybe you've just been projecting your upset without realising it."

with a grunt, Salem buried her face in tommy's chest, pouting. Tommy couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, clearly he was right. Salem just wrapped her arms around him.

"i hate that your smart." she murmured, "i just don't wanna lose my dad. it's not even like i'm his real kid, i could easily be replaced."

"you're his kid, Sal. regardless of its by blood or not, he's your dad. do you think he would have gone through all those adoption papers and stuck by your side for fifteen years if he didn't love you?"

"i guess."

a small sniffle could be heard and tommy hugged Salem tighter. Tommy gently grabbed her face, rubbing his thumb over the tear that had fallen.

"don't cry, stupid." Tommy complained.

Salem chuckled, "you're such a fucking sap when you wanna be." she teased.

"you love me." he proudly grinned.

"yeah."

a silence fell over them. Salem couldn't help but feel her eyes flicking to Tommy's lips, cursing herself for thinking that. but panic set in when she found both herself and tommy moving closer. cautiously, she jumped back.

"i should get to sleep." she said nervously biting her lip.

Tommys face dropped and he just nodded, "right yeah."

instantly, guilt consumed Salem. she could see the hurt in his eyes as he moved to stand up. did he want this as much as she did? quickly, she caught his hand,

"tommy wait."

her voice was barely a whisper by Tommy turned around instantly. Salem stood to her feet, taking a step closer to the blonde boy. she wrapped her arms round the back of his neck, leaning in.

when their lips met, reality hit them both. they couldn't believe they were in such a stupid situation. a few days ago they would have sworn to despising eachother but now they couldn't say that.

they pulled back simultaneously, shaking off the butterflies that lied in the pit of their stomachs. and although they could barely see it through the little light, they both had matching smiles.

"i-we should probably go to sleep now." Tommy chuckled awkwardly, although it was obvious he wasn't mad about the kiss.

Salem nodded, "yeah. i'm sorry if that was-"

"no it was fine. it's just quite... late."

Salem agreed with a shrug. Tommy quickly wrapped his arms around her one last time. Salem practically melted into his touch.

"night, Sal."

"night." she mumbled into his chest before pulling away and going back to the bed.

Tommy laid down on the air mattress, his heart racing at what had happened. he could barely believe he had kissed the one person he would have sworn blind he'd never fall for.

he reached his hand up to grab Salem's hand as she lay with her arm over the side of the bed. their fingers interlaced and they both softly smiled at the interaction. and just like that they both easily fell asleep.
