We fell into a shaky line.
"Hey— a little hustle," I called from the back. "Not trying to die today."
Max whispered, "What is this place?"
"Keep moving," Steve called.
Suddenly—
"HELP—HELP—HELP!" Dustin flailed on the ground.
"What happened?" I asked, rushing to him.
"It's in my mouth! It got in my mouth!" he wailed. A dramatic coughing fit. Then—"I'm okay."
I stared at him. "...What an idiot."
A minute later, Steve swept his flashlight over a large knot of vines.
"Alright, Wheeler. Looks like your hub."
"Drench it," Mike ordered.
We dumped gasoline and whatever flammable liquids we had. The air filled with the sharp, chemical bite of fuel.
"You ready?" Steve and I asked.
"Ready," the kids chorused.
Steve muttered beside me, "We're in such deep shit."
"You're not wrong," I murmured.
He tossed the lighter.
WHOOOMPH.
Flames roared to life.
"GO! GO!" Steve shouted.
We bolted, smoke curling behind us. I pointed toward an offshoot tunnel. "This way!"
Something whipped out and grabbed Mike's leg, dragging him down.
"HELP!" he screamed.
"Steve—pull him out!" Dustin yelled.
Lucas beat at the vine with his flashlight until it recoiled.
"You good?" I asked Mike, hauling him up.
But then—
A low, guttural growl.
We all froze.
"Dart..." Dustin whispered.
"Dustin, get back!" Max begged.
"Trust me," he whispered. "Please."
He stepped forward.
I stared in horror. "He's insane..."
Dustin spoke softly, hands raised. "It's me. Just Dustin. Remember me? Buddy?"
Dart snarled, muscles bunching.
"You hungry?" Dustin whispered.
He pulled out the candy bar—
The nougat one.
Dart sniffed.
Paused.
Ate.
"See?" Dustin murmured. "Good boy. Eat up."
He motioned us around him.
We tiptoed past.
Dustin gave one last, heartbroken look.
"Goodbye, buddy."
Then we ran.
The tunnel walls shuddered violently—
We fell.
"What was that?" Max gasped.
Growling— dozens of them—echoed up the tunnel.
"They're coming," Mike breathed. "RUN!"
We scrambled toward the exit, clawing our way out.
"Dustin! Come on!" Mike yelled.
I twisted around—
Steve and Dustin were still inside.
The demo-dogs barreled toward them—
