Part 34: Confrontation By Lamplight

Start from the beginning

"Uh... no..." Shoji looked away, suddenly feeling it hadn't been the wisest thing to say that.

"Then what are you going to do?" Jiro said, "Stop us by force?"

"No," Shine said, calmly, "You can do it if you want. I've told Momo this too-- We won't stop you if you feel it's the right thing to do."

Jiro looked at Momo strangely.

Momo nodded. "Yes, they have said that."

"And what secrets are you keeping for them?" Jiro asked.

"Oh, nothing like this," Momo said hastily, "Just... conversations. That's all."

"Yeah, okay." Jiro turned to Shine. "I don't like how you're using Momo against us."

"I'm not," Shine said, "I don't like how you're trying to use her against me, though. Momo is free to do as she sees fit with her information. If you trust her, you know she's not the type to hurt anyone. This behavior right here is why we haven't told you anything else, Jiro. Stop putting Momo in this position. I can only imagine what you'd do if we told you more about us."

"Hey, stop making me out to be the bad guy here!" Jiro was mad. "You broke the rules, not me."

"That's not the point," Wally said, "Shine's saying that it's up to all of you whether to sell us out or not, but you shouldn't be making that call for each other. Just know the consequences for doing it. You lose our trust."

"Well, why should we care? Why should we trust you?" Jiro demanded, "You're sneaking around, doing weird stuff, telling people one thing and other people other things. Come on, I can't be the only one seeing this."

"I agree," Shoji said.

"I suppose if we were trying to hurt you, we'd be upfront about all this," Shine countered, "Read the signs. These things we're doing need to be our business until such a time as it has to be yours. If you stay out of it, you won't be responsible for the results. Can't you see that's a good thing? Otherwise we implement all of you if we get caught and they know that you knew. This isn't exactly hard to figure out. If we were breaking the rules, and you found out, you'd be held responsible if you didn't tell your teachers. So we're not going to threaten you. If you don't want to be part of this, then don't be part of it, but confronting us was your choice. You got involved. Don't pin that on us. We went out of our way to make sure you wouldn't be in this position."

"Is that your excuse?" Shoji said, "That it's better for us not to know?"

"You don't have to believe it, kid," Wally crossed his arms, "but there are some things you really shouldn't know until you're sure you want to commit. It's not fair to drag you into our mess."

"You had better go to Aizawa," Shine advised, "It won't stop us, but it'll remove you from any  accountability in the situation. Then it's his problem. I imagine he'll find out soon enough anyway. He's not stupid. We can't avoid detection forever. But it's not really our goal to do so. 'Nothing is secret that will not be revealed.'"

That last part sounded like a quote, but no one knew from what, nor did they care, unless it was a creed of some sort.

"Well, I guess that's our answer. Let's go," Jiro said, turning.

Momo and Bakugo didn't move. Shoji seemed unsure. "Hold on... Let's think about this," he said, "If Mr. Aizawa becomes responsible, is that better? He could lose his job."

"That's what they want you to think," Jiro said, "He won't lose his job."

"It is very unlikely," Shine agreed.
