It's your story. Write it how you want. If you want your main characters to be POC, make them POC. If you want them to be straight, make them straight. If you want them to be jerks, make them be jerks. Let your readers hate them. Let your readers bash them and their choices. You make that character how you want them to be.
Write whatever story you want. You want the damsel in distress to save her equally distressed knight in shining armor? Do it! Who cares if it's been done before? No one has done it quite like you. Every great story has taken inspiration from another equally great one. How many Romeo and Juliet retellings have you seen? What about Beauty and the Beast? Alice in Wonderland? They all drew inspiration from similar things, but the stories are so diverse and we love each of them because of it.
Don't let anyone tell you how to write your book. It's yours. The characters are yours. The plot is yours. The world is yours. Incorporate anything you like. Leave out anything you don't like. Don't let anyone pressure you into adding something you're not comfortable with. No one can force their beliefs onto you unless you let them.
Some people won't like your stories. Others will. Support is important. Believe me, I know. Just remember this: stay true to yourself and others will stay true to you. One person may not like your story, but perhaps the next person will. There is always someone out there who will take delight from your words. Don't let yourself be bullied away from your true narrative. Your story is yours. Write it. Live it. Love it. It's yours.
