Adenna's POV
I come back home to find out my mom isn't home, again. She hasn't been a good parent in a while and it's starting to take a toll. Scratch that, it's already taken a toll. I am the sole provider for the three of us and I'm running out of money. The good news is I recently got a job at a local coffee shop. Even with my job, it's still hard to pay all of the bills. I give my brother some pasta and law down for a little bit. I feel myself slowly drift to sleep.
Oh shit, it's 2PM. I'm supposed to meet up with Jaxon in an hour at the park. I don't know what to wear. Wait. I don't need to impress Jaxon... but he's popular... and kind of hot. Stop Adenna, you can't fall for him, he doesn't date and I don't either. I only had one boyfriend in my entire life, Asher. I was in love with him and when I introduced Asher to my father he didn't take it too well. My father murdered Asher... just for loving me. My father went to jail for it but it drove me into a downwards spiral. I couldn't even look at another boy for months and when I eventually managed to put myself back together I made myself one rule.
No. Dating.
I wasn't about to break my rule for a boy like Jaxon. He's just the type of guy I'd fall for, just the type of guy that would break my heart.
Jaxon's POV
I arrived at the park 10 minutes early. Not that I wanted to be there or anything, I just wanted to make sure I got a good parking spot. I was having a relatively good day, I even got out of babysitting the kids! I sealed a deal with my eldest sister to babysit the kids and not say anything to our parents. $20 later, and I'm free.
Suddenly I heard someone calling my name. A quiet voice. I looked up and Adenna was standing there in a pretty summer dress. She looked pretty, which is something I would never say to girls like her. Unpopular girls aren't really my thing but she does look beautiful today.
"Hey," I say in a slightly nervous tone. I quietly scold myself. Why the fuck am I nervous? I never get nervous with the hot girls, much less her.
