Vina's POV
"See you later, dear. Mr Emeka will be the one to pick you because I'll be having a meeting later today and won't be able to make it."
I muster a smile with a simple nod. Her face lights up too in a very beautiful smile that even the angels can compete with.
My aunt gestures for me to hug her which I do. And like a mother would, she wraps her arms around me in a loving embrace. Involuntarily, a low sigh of satisfaction escapes my lips. I've always been a sucker for hugs and this one is definitely one of the best I have ever received.
After awhile, she pulls away and gently caresses my cheeks,“Just see this as a new start, okay? You will tell me all about your first day tonight. Please be good, if anything happens you can call me to let me know."
“Thank you." I blurt before I can fully process what I am saying.
Auntie Nenye's face contorts in a small frown,“For what, Vee?"
“For everything." I state,“For letting me into your home even after you heard what happened. Thank you for not casting me away."
“Don't thank me, Vee. I'm only doing what I can for my beautiful niece. Cheer up, my dear. All will be well."
This actually makes me feel lighter, better. That I am not the only one who thinks things will get better from here.
“I love you, Vina." She continues, her eyes trained on mine,“Don't ever forget that."
I feel a tear drop, then another and another till tears are rushing down my cheeks as my shoulders quake from crying. My aunt doesn't say a word. She just buries my head in her shoulder and gently rubs my back.
Luckily, we are the only ones in the administrative block's hallway at this time as I break down before my aunt.
My heart aches. A dull pain that seems eternal. I know it will be forever, I can only learn to just live with it. Gradually, I calm down and that is when my aunt raises my head from her shoulder.
“I love you too." I tell her, my voice coming out rough and throaty,“Please don't give up on me."
Her lips transcend from a little pout to her award-winning smile as she utters a single word,“Never."
I wipe away my tears and smile at her in gratitude.
“I'll see you later." She presses a kiss to my forehead before releasing me and walking away.
I stare at her retreating figure until she turns down the hallway. Exhaling loudly, I look through the schedule I have in my hands. I am assigned to SS2 A.
