that, right there, is the scariest feeling

it had been a few days since i had spent the night with beomgyu and it was still stuck in my mind.
it wasn't a unique occasion. the two of us were almost inseparable. we have spent almost every day of our lives together whether that be at school or through spending the night at one another's house.
so it shouldn't have had such an impact when i woke up the next morning cuddled up with him on the living room floor where we had both fallen asleep.
but i felt a panic run through me. not the panic you feel when you are scared. but the panic you feel when your best friend who you aren't supposed to have feelings for is sleeping about two inches from your face. especially when, spoiler alert, you have major feelings for said friend.
because of these growing feelings i suppressed, he was concerned. he kept catching me staring off in class or getting in trouble for not paying attention when the teacher called on me and i had no idea what was going on or what they had even said.
i was always like a teacher's pet. the good kid. the geek that was exceptional at school and always paid too much attention in class.
so it was unsettling for beomgyu to see the behavior i only exhibited when my mental health was plummeting.
"taehyun!"
i turned around and saw him running towards me in the hall. he tried to hide his concerned expression but he wore a transparent mask. i smiled, hoping it would squash suspicions.
"are you okay? you've seemed a bit off the last few days."
i nodded and excused it by saying i just missed my parents. thankfully after years of doing the opposite and lying to my parents that i would be fine without them so they wouldn't feel the burden of me being alone, i was a great liar.
well maybe not the best but i definitely was better than beomgyu.
he seemed relieved and hooked his arm around mine to drag me through the hall to get the good table in the lunchroom. even though we didn't need to run because it had been established since the first day of school that the table belonged to us.
when we got there soobin and yeonjun were holding hands with their arms resting on the table and beomgyu and i pretended to gag at the 'disgusting' sight even though all of us knew that they were the dream couple.
"no elbows on the lunch table lovebirds. geez kids these days, think they can get a boyfriend and suddenly have the freedom to drop table manners."
they rolled their eyes with a smile and moved their interlocked hands to rest between the others thigh. we sat across from them and found ourselves in a debate over whether or not mint chocolate ice cream was a disgusting toothpaste mixture sold as ice cream to trick kids into an evil dentist scheme to make everyone have better teeth.
well by we i mean the three oldest of the group who were very passionate about their mixed opinions. yeonjun felt alone at the idea of being the only one who liked the flavor and tried to look to me for assistance but i couldn't help but hold up my hands in surrender because i too agreed that i didn't like the nasty food.
(an; just in case yall were curious of my side in this debate, honestly mint choc is the best flavor)
"hi d-do you mind if i si-sit here? i'm new and i obvio-vious-obviously...don't know anyone yet."
they stopped debating and we all brought our attention to the nervous smiling brunette who stood at the end of the table looking desperately hopeful because this definitely wasn't the first table he had visited.
"sure go ahead, you can sit next to me."
beomgyu smiled brightly at the boy and scooted away from me to leave way for him to take a seat between the two of us. he seemed a tiny bit younger than the four of us and despite his nervous and somewhat awkward presence, he seemed very bright and kind.
he kind of reminded me of beomgyu in a way.
"what's your name?"
yeonjun caught his attention and he got surprised at the thought of forgetting to introduce himself. he was obviously embarrassed as the tips of his ears burned red.
"ah i'm s-sorry i totally forgot um, my name is Hue-Huening Kai, it's very n-ice to meet you."
"woah! your name really is cool! it sounds so unique. well my name is beomgyu. this is soobin, that's his boyfriend yeonjun, watch out they radiate extreme clingy couple energy,"
he whispered mischievously as the eldest of the group reached over the table and smacked his arm,
"and this, is my friend-"
"i'm his best friend, taehyun."
