Grit.

No, I'm not talking about the hard pebbles that get stuck in your shoe, or the awful sand that gets EVERYWHERE after a day at the beach, but you're not far off.

Grit is the down and dirty "life" every memorable story needs. All stories have a plot or general storyline. We've seen the same old five part pyramid since grade school with the rising action and the big old peak meant to represent the climax. But why is grit so essential to creative writing?

Hypothetically, if you read a story that stayed at one pace the entire time, no fight scenes, no character growth, no racing to save the princess from being mangled by a misinformed prince, we'd all be unconscious in the corner, our book fallen over our face and suffocating from sheer boredom.

To combat this, we consciously use two staples of all good stories: Plot and conflict. And one we unconsciously--unless you're a writing nerd like me--use: Style.

Okay, Wattfamily! Let's get down and dirty.
