"Tell me." he whined as he poked her arm.
"Seriously?" she asked.
"Yes because now I want to know." he said.
"Fine." she sighed. "I may or may not have said you were hot." she said quietly.
"What was that? I couldn't hear you." he teased as he cupped his ear. Adelaine smacked his arm.
"Oh shut up." she told him. Evan laughed and she pouted. "Stop it."
"What? You think I'm hot right?" He teased.
"Well you're not bad looking." she said.
"If it makes you feel any better I told Maggie you were beautiful." Evan said nonchalantly. Adelaine blushed prefusively. Evan looked at her and chuckled when he saw her looking away. "Did I just make the Adelaine Williams blush?"
"No." she stomped her foot like a child. "It's just hot out here."
"Why because I'm here?" he continued teasing her.
"Oh my gosh I hate you." she started walking faster.
"Yeah right." he scoffed and followed after her.
"Cocky asshole." she muttered even though a smile was fighting it's way to her lips.
Adelaine didn't know what it was about Evan but they just clicked instantly. She couldn't help but feel a certain way around him and that scared her. The last time she let herself fall for someone she ended up getting hurt. She knew that Evan wouldn't hurt her but in this world you could lose someone so easily. She didn't want to lose him so she just shook the feeling off and continued walking.
------
They got back to the farm after a couple hours of searching. The sun was still out and people were walking around. Adelaine saw Rick standing by a car and decided to go talk to him.
"I'll see you late pretty boy." She told Evan and headed over to camp. Evan watched her walk away before turning and walking up to the farmhouse.
He walked inside and went to his room to change. He set the backpack down on his bed along with Adelaines gun.
"Hey son." he turned and saw his father standing in the doorway.
"Hey dad." he said as he pulled of his shirt and looked for another one. "What's up?"
"What's going on with you and the hispanic girl?" Hershel asked. Evan looked up at his dad and saw his arms crossed and a serious expression.
"Her names Adelaine." Evan told his dad. "She's a friend."
"I'd rather she wasn't." Hershel said. Evan looked up at his dad.
"What?"
"These people are getting too comfortable on our land." Hershel told his son. "I don't want you getting attached to any of them."
"Dad, she's just a friend."
"It's bad enough I have to chase Beth and Jimmy around." Hershel said.
"I'm a grown man dad." Evan pulled his shirt on and walked towards his dad. "I'm not sixteen and even if I was, I'm smart enough to not do that stuff around you or under your roof."
"I know you are." Hershel nodded. "Which is why I'm counting on you to be the mature one. I already talked to Maggie about that Asian boy."
"Glenn." Evan cut his dad off. "They have names dad. She not just some hispanic girl and he isn't just some asian boy, have a little respect."
"Do not interrupt me." Hershel said sternly. "I mean it. Don't get attached."
With that Hershel turned and left the room. Evan flopped down on his bed and dragged a hand down his face. He liked Adelaine, he knew that already. He enjoyed spending time with her and she was fun to be around. But like his dad said, 'don't get attached'.
It was a little too late for that.
------
Adelaine sat in the room with Rick and Shane while Hershel stitched up Daryl's side. She looked down at her bloody knuckles on her hand. After Andrea shot Daryl, Adelaine snapped and punched her in the face a few times. She thought that Daryl was dead when she saw his body drop and it scared her.
"Want me to wrap that for you?" she looked up at Beth. Adelaine nodded with a small smile. She followed Beth out of the room and followed her into the dining room. She sat at the table while Beth got bandages.
She held her hand out while Beth wiped something over her knuckles that stung making her wince.
"Sorry." Beth mumbled with a smile on her face.
"It's okay. I just wasn't ready." Adelaine chuckled lightly.
"I'm sorry about your friend." Beth said referring to Daryl.
"It's okay. He's one tough SOB." Adelaine said. They sat in silence for a bit before Beth spoke up again.
"Do you like my brother?"
Adelaine looked taken aback by the question and laughed nervously.
"What are you talking about?"
"Well, I don't know. I think he likes you. You guys went on a run together and then you went looking for that little girl together." Beth told her.
"Well, you're brother's just a good conversationalist." Adelaine said sarcastically. "Besides, there's no time for relationships in this world."
"You never know. If you truly like him then maybe there is. I see the way he looks at you." Beth said. Adelaine just smiled at the girl.
She might like him, but she just wasn't ready.
