"twist to change the settings,"

with a frustrated sigh, katsuki did as told and glanced over at the physician who continued talking.

still. nothing. he couldn't fucking hear anything.

katsuki shook his head, staring at man, who was shaking his head and writing on that stupid fucking clipboard or whatever the hell it was. he clicked his pen, "we have to do another examination of the your cochlea,"

"what the hell does that even mean?"

his doctor paused with a look. one that said it would take too long to explain. it meant katsuki would just have to go along with it because the doctors were in charge and apparently knew what was best. katsuki rolled his eyes and his doctor nodded, taking a step back. "if we could just have you transfer to the-"

"fucking whatever," katsuki groaned, sliding from the bed, knowing what room he had to go to. the hall was chilly and less busy than usual, thank whatever god. he hated crowded halls, sick people wondering around, getting their damn germs all over the place.

he pulled out his phone to text his mom the news, telling her she and his father would have to wait in the waiting room just a tad longer as he made his way down the hall, squinting ahead.

it was a short distance from where he was to the examination room. katsuki stepped to the side as a few nurses passed, waiting by a room- the door slightly ajar, he paid no mind until-

"mh, yeah. but i definitely want to help people, you know?" katsuki knew that voice. maybe. he drew his brows and, being more nosy than he typically would be, turned around to peer into the small room. he held his breath, narrowing his eyes at the sight.

y/n sat on the bed. she held a stupidly large teddy bear in her arms with a smile that didn't at all seem genuine. pained, rather. and she was talking to an older man, not her doctor or nurse since the uniform wasn't on. probably someone personal, then. "so i'll probably do it. if it doesn't work, that is."

katsuki raised his fingers to his hearing aids. he shouldn't have been able to catch that. were the stupid things actually working? well, that wouldn't really make sense, seeing as how he could barely hear what was happening around him.

he shoved his phone back into his pocket and, though he wanted to stay and hear what y/n might've been talking about- what she was even doing at the hospital in the first place- it was none of his damn business and the nurses had already passed.

with one last look at the girl, katsuki pulled himself away and went into the room for examination.

"severe to profound hearing loss

"severe to profound hearing loss. vital parts of your ears have been damaged beyond repair. just a single one-time exposure to an extreme loud sound can cause hearing loss. in your case, it's been constant. the exposure of your quirk has damaged the cells and membranes in your cochlea. and the consistency of this has caused damage to the inner ear or auditory neural system, which is generally permanent."

he already knew all this.

katsuki gave his doctor a look.

"which means, bone anchored hearing loss and cochlea implants will assist with your loss of ability to detect vibrations and frequency. we'll just adjust the aids to better suit the amount of decibels you're able to hear in sounds- and it seems you can't hear anything less than 80."

katsuki opened his mouth to tell him about what he caught earlier- the fact he could hear a quiet conversation from outside a room.

he didn't.

instead, he asked, "are you shouting right now?"

the doctor blinked. katsuki blinked. he watched his doctor press his lips into a thin line.

"we both are."
