Through it all, East High's Production of High School Musical had been a success despite all of the setbacks they had faced opening night. Nini Salazar-Roberts had indeed gotten into the Youth Actors Conservatory and was en route to Denver. Meanwhile, Athena Blake and Ricky Bowen were better than ever and their relationship had grown stronger. Everything seemed like it was falling into the right places. And Athena, with her heart fluttering just by the fact Ricky and her were still dating, had high hopes for the upcoming months.
But things take a turn after the holidays. With new students, a heated theater rivalry with North High, and a new musical (Beauty and the Beast, which made Athena confused because she thought it would be High School Musical 2, but how cool!), more drama arrives at East High whether they want it or not. Athena and Ricky end up facing more challenges that they thought they would in their relationship, including some blonde girl who's trying to break them apart. Will they prevail, or will Athena be left heartbroken on the side?
