"No. No way. Absolutely not," I growled.

"You don't have a choice, Agent l/n," Maria said sternly.

"You know how I feel about men," I growled.

All men were the same. My ex-boyfriend had lowered my standards for men severely.

"I know what he did and what you're going through-"

"No, you don't," I interrupted. "You know what he did, but you don't know how it feels, Maria. How it feels to have your very will taken away from you."

Tears threatened to fill my eyes, but I kept them away.

"Y/n, Steve is nothing like that douche," Maria said. "Besides, you'll barely have to talk to him."

I groaned and looked to the ceiling.

"Fine," I growled.

I took the mission file and left Maria's office to get ready for the mission. The mission files were heavy, and I only opened them once I'd reached my room. It seemed simple. Get into the Hydra base, save some hostages and get out. My team leader was Captain Rogers. I felt myself rolling my eyes as I looked over his profile. No matter how much I hated and distrusted men, however, his eyes looked... kind.

I mentally shook myself. Maybe I just felt lonely.

Soon enough, it was time for me to embark on the mission. I had double and triple checked that all of my guns and knives were in perfect working order before I boarded the jet. There were fifteen other soldiers on the jet, plus the captain. Captain Rogers caught my eye and smiled. I looked away and walked away from him.

The journey was uneventful. I felt the captain's eyes burn into me, but I never looked back at him. It annoyed me.

Finally, we got to the Hydra base.

"Okay, listen up," Captain America said.

He then told people where to be and what to do. I was outraged when he announced that I was supposed to stick with him.

We walked out of the jet and began the mission. There were a few Hydra soldiers out the front. I took out two while the captain took out four. It enraged me that he was taking out more than me.

We continued through the base in silence, the rest of our team following us. The captain held his hand out for us to stop. I did so unwillingly, not wanting to follow his orders. I inched ahead of my teammates, wanting to see why the captain wanted us to stop.

Suddenly, there was a loud boom, and the roof began to crumble above me. Quick as lightning, the captain grabbed my arm and pulled me to him and covered me with his shield. I heard loud, metallic clanks as rubble landed on the captain's shield. Once the rain of debris had finished and the dust had cleared, we looked up.

Our entire squad was on the opposite side of a wall of rubble. I internally swore, hating the fact that I was on the same side as the captain. I would have preferred to have been squished.

"Okay, team. You find a way through this while y/n and I find the hostages. When we get back, we'll see if we can help," Rogers said.

Great. Maria said I wouldn't have to talk to him, and now we were stuck together.

"Come on," Rogers said, motioning with his shield to move forward.

Before we could move, however, four armed soldiers turned down the hall. Before the captain could react, I'd shot them all directly through the chest. The captain's jaw dropped.

"Come on, then," I growled, stalking forwards.

The captain followed after me, and quickly caught up to the swift pace I'd set.

"Did I do something to offend you?" he asked after a few moments of silence.

I rolled my eyes.

"Not you," I growled.

I glanced at the captain from the corner of my eye. He had a confused expression on his face. I sighed. Was it really fair that I treated him like this? He hadn't done anything wrong. He hadn't mind controlled me to do things I didn't want to do. He didn't leave bruises on my body whenever I refused to do something. I sighed again.

"I don't trust men," I admitted. "It's nothing you did; I just have a... a grudge."

"Oh," the captain said.

He was silent for a moment and I knew he wanted to know why.

"My... ex-boyfriend abused me," I said quietly.

The captain didn't have time to reply when four Hydra agents rounded the corner. I shot two of them while the captain knocked the other two out.

"I'm sorry you had to go through that," Rogers said.

"Yeah, I am too," I replied.

We walked further into the building in silence.

"Captain, Captain! It's a trap! Get out!"

I heard the voice in my ear. Before we could do anything, the building blew up. I was thrown across the room. The captain landed next to me and his shield landed on the opposite side of the room. Three agents came into the room and began to fire at us. The captain shielded my body with his own.

"No!" I screamed.

Steve's body jerked as bullets slammed into him. I reached around him with a gun in my hand and shot the agents. They fell to the ground, dead.

I got out from underneath the captain's body.

"Steve? Steve? Are you okay?" I asked frantically.

I shook him but only a low groan came out of his mouth.

"We need medical backup," I said into my comms. "The captain's been shot."

I looked at Steve's wounds. There were two bullet holes in his left arm and one in his leg, but that was it. Nothing in his chest or anywhere vital.

"Oh, thank god," I muttered.

The next few hours went by in a blur. Shield agents got to the captain and I. They tried to take him away from me, but I growled at them. Steve and I travelled in a jet back to the Shield headquarters. We were both taken to the medical bay. I had a bullet in my shoulder that I hadn't even noticed. I was too scared for Steve.

Steve. The only man that I didn't entirely hate. He had sacrificed himself for me. But why?

Steve was unconscious for two days. He was on some serious painkillers that could knock out even a super soldier. When he awoke, I was sitting in a chair beside his bed. I gave him a glass of water and he gulped it down eagerly.

"You're not supposed to leave for a few weeks," I said, filling the silence.

Steve just nodded.

"You saved me," I said.

It wasn't a question, but Steve still nodded all the same.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because it was the right thing to do. You deserve to live. You could probably do a better job at all of these missions than I do, anyway. I've seen the footage of your fighting skills. You're amazing," he said.

Because it was the right thing to do. You deserve to live. A tear slid down my cheek.

Steve Rogers, the only man who was able to get any type of emotion out of me since the abuse. All because he deemed my life worth saving, even though I had been rude to him ever since I'd met him.

"Well, Captain, once you're healed, I hope to embark on more missions with you," I said.

The captain's eyes twinkled.

"As do I," he said.

I kissed him on the cheek before I left. I saw the blush rise to his cheeks and smiled to myself. I couldn't wait to spend more time with him.
