Part 5

“Did you know you gave me a RAISIN muffin?” I exclaimed. “I’m ALLERGIC to raisins!”

“Oh, I did?” his voice comes through the phone. “I’m sorry, Ness.” He started to mumble after that.

“What? You’re mumbling,” I frown.

“Sorry. Listen. How about I take you out to make up for it? Same place as last time. You love that place, don’t you?”

I pressed my lips together and stayed quiet. He knew that I was allergic to raisins. It was one of the first things I told him when we started to become friends. He should have known that when he bought the muffin in the first place.

“Ness, don’t get mad at me. It was an accident. I must have ate your chocolate chip muffin. I’m sorry,” he pushes the silence away. “Tomorrow night, I’ll come pick you up at seven, okay?”

“Fine,” I say, still kind of upset that he mixed up our muffins. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

I didn’t give him a chance to say bye before I hung up. I kind of couldn’t help but be mad at him. I could have died from eating that muffin. Food is dangerous.

The flowers on my desk suddenly caught my eye. They were starting to wilt. I remembered to water it this morning, didn’t I? I groaned as I took the vase into my hands. I took it down to the kitchen to add more water to the vase from the sink.

I heard the front door slam shut. It must be Allen. I knew I had to apologize for the other night. I had exploded, and I didn’t mean to. I hurriedly put the flowers back in the vase and met him in the front of the house.

“Hey,” I put a weak smile on my face. He doesn’t say anything. He only looked up at me with sad hazel eyes. “Listen, I’m sorry for the other day. I didn’t mean to upset you like that. It’s just, Damon means a lot to me. Even though he looks like trouble, he really isn’t. And I didn’t mean the words I said to you either. So basically, I’m sorry.”

He puts down his bag and hugs me. I hug him back, relieved that he was okay. “Ness, I’m sorry, too. I still don’t trust him, though. And I’m sorry that the… accident, is still bothering me. I know it was months ago, but I still feel bad.”

“What was her name?” I ask out of curiosity. He sat down on the stairs, patting the spot next to him. I sat, and he looked straight ahead.

“Trista,” he says. “She was my age, a senior. I didn’t know her that well, other than the fact that she was smart. She was in the Top Ten, placing in third. I shared a few classes with her but didn’t think of it much. One day, I was driving home from work. I had to work over time because we had a lot of customers that day. I was hurrying home because I had to leave you home by yourself all day, and I hated the idea of leaving you alone for the rest of the night.

“I saw her walking all alone so I offered to take her home. When I got on the highway, there was ice. I lost control of the car.” His voice was starting to break now. “I stopped the car, but someone else rammed into the car but on her side. She-she was killed instantly.”

“Oh my,” I said quietly. “I’m so sorry, Allen. I had no idea.”

“It’s fine. No one really did,” he says. “Anyway, I heard you had an allergic reaction today. How are you doing?”

“I’m fine. Thank you, for telling me.” He smiles at me. His eyes had that shine now. That shine had left when he had gotten in the accident. I’m so glad it’s back.

“How about dinner?” he gets up, and we head into the kitchen together.

“If you hurt her, I’ll come after you,” I heard Allen warn Damon. I just smile. My big brother’s back.

“Damon,” I say, which caught Damon’s attention. He looks up at me coming down the stairs, and he smiles.

“Have fun, Ness,” Allen tells me. “And you! Don’t mess it up.”

“Bye, Allen,” I wave. “Sorry about him. He’s finally moving on from the accident.”

“That’s good,” he smiles, and starts driving to the restaurant.

I see Faith again. She looks at me nervously but forces a smile when she asks Damon for his name.

“Damon. I have a reservation for two,” he says, and she just nods.

We follow her past the seating area, which isn’t the way it should be. We were walking past all the couples and families that were already sitting and eating their food.

“Where are we going?” I ask her.

“To your table,” she said simply.

I was confused but continued to follow Faith to the back of the restaurant. We went through a door to the alley. I gasped.

There was a porch that was connected to the restaurant even though it was in an alley. The wooden railings were decorated with candles, bright lights, and flowers. There was a table in the middle with a tan tablecloth and two chairs.

The centerpiece was also candles and flowers. It was such a romantic atmosphere, and I couldn't help but smile.

"How?" I gasped as I brought my hands up to my face.

"Anything for you, remember?” he smiles at me.
Faith hands us our menus while Damon pushes in my chair. He was really trying to make up for the muffin. I was proud of him for that.
We had a nice dinner with some sparkling juice. He had told me he had gotten this all ready a few hours before he had to come pick me up. It was unbelievable. How did he even plan this out? That didn't matter now. The results were amazing, and I realized at that point, I couldn’t have asked for anyone else or anything else from Damon.

“I’m going to go pay the bill,” he says, and leaves through the door into the restaurant.

I take in the scenery one last time. I still can’t believe he went through all that for me. The flowers, candles, lights, everything. It was my third time getting food from the same restaurant in one week, but that didn’t really matter. We had a great dinner, and he was still really sweet.

“Ready to go?” I ask once I hear the door creak open.

“Not yet. I have one surprise for you left. Close your eyes, Ness,” I hear him say.

“This is too much for one date, Damon,” I smile, and obey.

Suddenly, I felt something pinning me to the chair. “Damon?” I asked, confused. “What are you doing?” Immediately, I felt something thin and cold against my neck. “Damon!” My eyes shot open, and my heart started to race when I realized what he was holding against me.
