In a bustling city headed by a king, the sun had just risen. The citizens are going about their daily routine. Merchants are seen trying to sell off their goods and purchase another.

In a little cottage, a young girl was seen dressed in men robes trying to hurry up.

" Mama I'm late already"

" Just a minute dear, you can't leave on an empty stomach" a woman in her early forties was seen carrying a tray.
The girl hugged her and tried to run out.

" Hold on young lady" the woman said.

" But mama..."

"Eat"

She sighed and sat down, the woman made sure her daughter had taken up to two bites of the bread before she left to bring tea.
Seeing the chance to run off, the young lady quickly grabbed a sword and tied her belt while running out of the house at a top speed.

The woman realized and chased after her.

" Maddie!" She called out, the young woman only waved at her mother without looking back.

The older woman could only shake her head as she went back to the house.

In the palace

" Excuse me please"

" Sorry" Maddie was running through the palace corridors trying to reach the guards training ground in time. She almost knocked into a maid who was carrying a tray on her right palm.

The king and his right hand man or let's just say his personal bodyguard alongside the chief captain of the royal guards were already making their way to the training grounds.

" Your majesty, what do you think of the progress we've made so far?" Calhoun the chief captain asked the king.

"Fair" the aloof king replied not slowing down his pace.

" That's a good sign" the chief smiled and hurried after his king.

Maddie had reached the training grounds and headed for the door. Jack, the king's right hand man opened the door and as usual Maddie was behind the door. The king handed over his coat to Jack who gave it to Maddie.

" You're late again" Calhoun scolded her.
Maddie bowed her head in apology , the king glanced at her.

" Punctuality is one of the things expected from a guard"

She took a quick peek at him, his ever handsome face with his black hair combed backwards wore a cold and aloof look.

" Yes your highness" she replied

" Your highness?" Jack inquired.

" I'm sorry, yes your majesty" she bowed.

" Better" Calhoun replied and the trio left

There was a knock on the door

" Come in"

Maddie stepped into the furnished room where Jack called his office.
Jack was seated behind the desk , her eyes wandered to the woman sitting across the desk.

" Good morning Carla" she greeted but the woman couldn't even be bothered to reply.

Carla was an elite guard, good in all aspects and she had been the king's friend since childhood. There were only two girls in the entire royal guard which were Carla and Maddie. Unlike Maddie, Carla was outstanding and carried herself with pride while Maddie was a slacker, she couldn't even handle a sword.

" What brings you here?" Jack asked.

" Oh, the king's jacket" Maddie replied and Carla's eyes widened.

" Hang it by the usual place, I'll take it to him"

" Yes" Maddie hanged the coat by the door and left.

" The king's jacket?" Asked Carla who had been quiet the whole time.

" Yeah, it's actually a coat but she calls it his jacket" Jack replied still flipping through a book.

" You know that's not what am talking about, Jack" Carla retorted. Jack closed the book and looked up.

" So, what if she's with the king's jacket?" He asked.

" It's a coat"

" Then you should know that Maddie comes at the same time we usually go to inspect the training grounds and that the king usually hands over his coat to her to act as his hanger for the time he would spend there as a punishment and she would have to return it thereafter"

" Ha!" Carla scoffed

" That is not even considered a punishment" she said

" Very well then" Jack stood up and took the coat, he opened the door and turned back.

" If you have any suggestions, I believe you should see the king" he slightly bowed and left, after all she's a Noble's daughter.

"Bang"

she slammed the table when the door closed.

" Don't push me Maddie, don't" she gritted her teeth.

She had always done everything to gain the king's attention and didn't succeed even though they had been friends since childhood but a weakling even got his attention by being just a weakling. What a joke.
