8. The Patch

Suzy found a patch of wall. It was thin, like paper, like skin. The patch bulged.

Suzy didn't understand. Every other wall was thick, hard, brick or cement. They didn't bulge.

Suzy got a knife from the kitchen. Mommy didn't know. She would never know. Suzy was good at keeping secrets.

Suzy stood on her tippy toes and, as quickly as she could, brought the blade down.

All it took was a single stab. The patch broke open, a line tearing itself. Red dribbled. Suzy gasped as—

Jaws. Teeth suddenly came into view. But this was wrong. There weren't supposed to be any teeth.

Suzy dropped the knife, and started to back away from—

Suzy froze. Something was curled around her ankle, warm and slimy. She could feel it throbbing.

She glanced—

Suzy couldn't even scream. The length of intestine was yanked back, hard.

Ribs—

Suzy didn't feel a thing.
