They were gone, missing, and Jackie found herself visiting their rooms every morning. She'd wake up before the sun had risen, then creep down the hallway.
She'd open the door to their shared bedroom. Not that wide. Just wide enough to take a peek.
It wasn't like she expected to see them there. That was ridiculous. All she wanted was some hope.
They'd been missing since Halloween. Timothy and Eric. Last seen trick-or-treating, with Eric looking at his phone and Timothy dragging a bulging bag of candy behind him.
Last seen entering the local cemetery.
Last seen. Their bodies hadn't been found. The investigation was officially closed. Unsolved.
Jackie shook her head, wiped away the tears. She crept down the hallway. Her slippered feet were gentle.
She gripped the doorknob with sweaty palms.
She opened the door, peaked inside, saw—
A scream. A thud. Ragged breathing.
Not empty. Jackie was sure. Their beds were not empty. There were skeletons in them.
A skeleton in each.
Two skeletons.
