The walk back to the dorm room was sullen, I was busy thinking while Ecanus seemed to be trying to talk to me, but he only got as far as opening his mouth. By the time I’d walked into my and Cas’s room, he was slumped on the sofa, defeated.

I stood with my back to the door, staring at Cas, as I leaned back against it and locked it without breaking my gaze on Cas.

“Cas?” I said in monotone,

“Uh...” he started, then looked up away from his.. stuff.. and seemed to suddenly become more interested as he saw me, “Yeah?”

I stared at him a minute longer. He was starting to fidget under my gaze.

“Ava?”

“How do you feel about me?” I blurted out,

“Huh?” he startled and knocked over the chair behind him with a clatter, he tried awkwardly to pick it up but he knocked some papers off the desk too,

“Ah..” he blushed,

“A-answer me!” I stuttered, what a time to lose my cool!

“Uhh..” he blushed more,

“Did you write this letter?” I started using an unintentionally shrill voice as I pulled out the letter from my pocket and ran at him with it, my own blush darkening,

“Uh”

“Did you?”

“Uh..”

Did you?!”

“I..”

Yes?

“I..”

Yes?

“I.. wrote that yes..” he looked away from me, flustered like me, and still blushing bright red,

“Oh.” was all I could say,

“W-well..” I stammered, “These feelings..” I continued, “They uh..” I went on, “Are forbidden.” I finished with a curt nod.

“Huh?” he looked at me, in disbelief and confusion,

“You want to stay friends?”

“Yes?”

“You don’t want things to get awkward?”

“Uh.. yeah?”

“Then we just go back to before I found this letter.. Oh'kay?” I managed a little shakily--awkwardness making us both act shakily-- “And we can be the angel twins again. I mean, maybe not now, I may like you.. but I sorta see you as an older brother...” I started droning on..

“Not now?”

“Yeah.. as in not at this moment in time.”

“But maybe?”

“y-you n-never kn-know..” I stuttered nervously as he came closer, smiling at me,

“Oh'kay.”

“Oh'kay?” I said shakily, now on the opposite end of the power play,

“As in ‘yeah we can go back to being the twins’” he said in air quotes,

“Uh.. your really okay with that?”

“I guess so.”

We both sat awkwardly for a moment, then both of us burst into a ‘busy life’ that suddenly existed,

“I'm gonna--“

“Yeah me too--“

and that was that.

The next day was cheery like all those before it had been, by early morning, Ecanus was in disbelief over our quick recovery.

“So.. just like that?” he asked,

“Yup.” me and Cas said together, me smearing jam on toast for each of us.

He shook his head, then pushed away from the table in resignation. me and Cas smiled at each other again, somehow completely recovered.

I put the dishes from saturday morning breakfast in the sink, and just as I turned around to put dish soap on them, Cas snatched the soap bottle out of my hands and started washing them himself.

“Hey! I can do that!” I reached for the soap, barricaded by Cas’s arm,

“But I want to! So go plan our outing with Ecanus! its only 8 in the morning after all”

“But--“

“Just go.” he nudged me away so he could put a plate on the drying rack.

“Fine.” I huffed, and then stomped over to Ecanus who was lounging on the sofa watching courage the cowardly dog.

“What are we doing today?”
